Creating Monsters...

If I were to buy one of the MMs, which one would you guys recommend? MM I or MM II, or any other 3e monster book for that matter (for purposes of creating new monsters, I mean). I can't buy RPGs in a store where I live so I can't just browse through a book to see which is better.

Hi!

You definitely need the MM (1) because it has all the information you need to make up a monster yourself. It has all the instructions and Monstrous feats in its appendix. Furthermore, you have all the basic critters "in the zoo" to compare your new ones against.

Kind regards

I think the first Monster Manual is the one with most imformation about that, although it may not be a "complete guide" to creating monsters (it's still the best book for a walkthrough of monsters of every type and CR). Perhaps next year's Dungeon Master's Guide II may have a chapter about that, but I'm not sure.

If you're mainly interested in creating your own monsters, get Grim Tales. It has
an incredibly useful chapter on the subject of assigning abilities, estimating CR,
and the relationship between ECL and CR.
