Creative Excersize 2: It all starts with a map.

Other than humanoids there are no mammals living on the islands and flightless birds (and giant vermin) have evolved to capture the various niche left because of it - from small snuffling scavengers to gigantic razor-clawed predators - this is a land of birds.

....it would be helpful to know such specifics beforehand. I wasn't aware the mountains weren't nearly tall enough to be icy at the top.

I'm sorry I wasn't that clear. Each color shade indicates 1000' higher than the one before, starting at 0. Mountains at the subtropics need to be around 12,000 - 13,000' before they'll be snowcapped year round. None of the mountains shown in the middle pennensula are that high.

There is a rumor of an island that sits atop four stone pillars that start at oceans floor and has a community of mixed races living in the sun and another community living underneath the city, resting just on the water. [Stormhaven]

The island in the center of the map is home to an expansionistic theocrat, that has been moving outward, this government is based on voodoo shaman necromancers (NE or LE). People are killed then revived in an undead slavery.

This theocrat is a half dragon (black dragon for the "voodoo" part? Maybe green? The other half is elf) who is expansionistic and converting the living population to undead minion armies precisely because the ritual to convert one to the other is what is keeping her alive. She is several hundreds, if not thousands, of years past the normal venerable top age for her "race" and yet at the worst of times (just before another rejuvenating ceremony) appears merely "middle aged".

The Peninsula to the north (red line area) is a merchantile city state (aka Troy - LN or LG) that is starting to see the 'undead ships' interferring with shipping and commerce, to add to this their are voodoo cults coming into the area, this had made the city concerned. some of the actions they are looking at:
Free booters are being hired to sink all undead ships.
Adventures are also being hired to 'disrrupt aggressive actions in the area'
The city state is also trying to unite other nations for the danger they see coming.

A "nation" of sea-faring lizard-men pirate the southern seas, making safe harbor in the archipellago in the south.

The island in the bay on the east coast of the northern peninsula is called Asahi, and is home to rabidly xenophobic humans with strange powers. They allow none to trespass on their island and do not trade or interact with anyone else.
