I'll give this a whirl.:)

The creature is not very strong but extremely tough if you can get close enough to find out. Nor is it fast or agile, preferring to move at a leisurely walking pace. This gives time for unwholesome plant life to rapidly grow flourish and die with its passing,

This rapid growth of plants is a magical defense with much of the resulting plant life being ambulatory, poisonous, and aggressive or simply providing a thorny barrier if need be.

The creature is highly intelligent and when confronted it chooses which plants will sprout and defend in much the same manner a user of more mundane magics would choose a spell.

Wow... my idea of this creature is almost completely the opposite. I don't see it being highly intelligent at all.

I see this Primal Force causing random growth mainly as a side effect. It only focuses it's powers when it is attacked.

Of course that's just my opinion. Obviously there is a wide variety of views on this.

Actually this is the way I see it also. The great majority of the time the plants are popping up randomly brought into being through the subconscious desire of the creature. However it is when the creature is threatened that a conscious effort is made and the full nature of its power and intelligence is revealed.
