There's a whole thread that is essentially a database of music related threads, each of which is chock full of good ideas:

The drone band Earth has all kinds of stuff that would be appropriate, as would the work of extreme guitarist Buckethead's recordings as Death Cube K. You could also get some mileage out of the compositions of Glen Branca.

In a different direction, check out the groups Kronos Quartet and Apocalyptica.

Thanks - I had good luck a few years back in finding a good song to emulate the harpy's song: it was an a capella woman's group called The Magic of Bulgarian Voices that worked out well: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdqjcW8u7Lw]YouTube - HNY 2011 - The MAGIC Of Bulgarian Voices & Music - Malka Moma / Little girl - LIVE (Gold collection)[/ame]

It's a capella, as harpies don't carry instruments, and it is foreign and sounds lovely (IMO)

Easy.
The score from the game Thief: Deadly Shadows would easily fit. It is ambient music and works okay if you just want to loop a particular track.

Dude, those are so cool. Also, the way you embedded them, you can play all of them at the same time. They actually work pretty good layered on top of eachother.

:D

It may surprise some, but some works of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream can be quite dark, in some cases, veering deeply into psychedelia.

For Vangelis, check out his CD, Themes, which includes some of his work from movies like Bladerunner and Antarctica- the latter is a little known stunner- or the more mellow Soil Festivities.

With TD, check out Atem, Sorcerer, Stratosfear and so forth.

Oh yeah- Western sensibilities may be unnerved a bit by music from other cultures- like Tibetan Throat Music- or the sounds of unusual instruments like crystal organs, singing bowls or fire organs.
