Critical Hits

Left-handed Hummingbird:
You are correct, it's in the DMG as an optional rule. The rest of what our friend does with respect to crits during his stints as DM is entirely of his own creation :) .

DnD Chick:
At some point soon (tomorrow in all likelihood, while I'm at work) I intend to read your crit tables, and even potentially send them to the friend I mention above. Question though, do they account for balancing weapons with higher threat ranges and/or larger damage modifiers?

Double Criticals

If a critical is rolled twice in a row then it can be tested a thrid time and if a successful strike is made the following occurs

up to 25% of current HP lost = Wound
up to 50% of current HP lost = Injury
up to 75% of current HP lost = Crippled
up to 99% of current HP lost = Maimed

Wound = -1 hp per round (blood loss)
Injury = temporary stat drop (broken bones etc)
Crippled = permenant stat drop
Maimed = loss of limb/eye

I use the critical hit rules from Combat and Tactics (2nd edition). This does have the effect of making it more deadly for the PC's, so I run adventures one level below the party level. Of course, this leads to fewer XP, so I also use the individual XP from 2nd edition, modified for 3rd. All in all, my PC's are happy and it seems to work well.:)
