Westmarches? Oh, hell yeah! I hope this helps get more CR fans interested to try more open-table style play.
My first west marches game went great: IRL game, 2+yrs 'til COVID, about a dozen players, half of which were into the stronghold-building aspect.. and 2-3 players that played basically every session.

My second and third attempts, online games (some with the same people that were IRL), fell flat. All of the players had played with me either online or in-person, but after a few sessions they really didn't like the idea that they were "missing out" on sessions that they didn't play in. Say group 1 goes to dungeon A, cleared 30% of it, had to leave at the end of the session. Group 2 goes to dungeon A, a week or two have passed so some stuff has changed etc, creatures moved in. They clear 60% of it. Group 1 went back to dungeon A, and were really annoyed that group 2 had been there, even if group 2's work led group 1 to clear the dungeon 100% on their return... and then group 2 would be annoyed that group 1 ended up clearing the place.

So, a LOT of us were expecting CR to go ahead with their new Daggerheart system for their new campaign. The sales are doing gangbusters, and they even picked up Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford for Daggerheart.

Using Daggerheart would show they were independent, confident and looking for something new. All of which would have been very interesting. The game itself seems to fit their playstyle.

But maybe they didn’t want to change TOO much. Brennan Lee Mulligan is taking the reins and they are using a larger cast that swaps out. That is gonna feel different. If they changed the system as well, they might have lost some of their viewers because there was too much change.

Critical Role matters in our hobby, whether we want it or not. It’s what got me hooked personally! It is a gateway into our hobby and they keep on growing and trying new things.

I have long stopped watching them, because nowadays I get the itch to play myself when I listen. I have bought Daggerheart, and hope to run it sometime soon. I play tons of D&D, because I really do enjoy it a lot.

Maybe the players of CR also really enjoy D&D?

I hope Critical Role and their Critters have tons of fun with it all.

We have a news article and thread on this so I’ll close this one.
