Criticals... How to maximize them

I was beaten to it, but at least my link works... ;)

Bah. Like I know VB Code :)

And since they disabled all non-essential functions, I can never find the Help when I need it :)

And the Sage never answers my questions anyway.

I'm certainly with you on the first one - I rely hevily on the vB help. The Sage, though, has answered about half a dozen of my questions; I guess he just doesn't like you, HS. :D

VB Code? Whatever.

I've been using the 'custserv@wizards.com' address for my Sage questions. I used to get good responses.

I sent 7 questions around grappling, OA monk PrCs and a couple of other smaller things about a week and a half ago.

I got one answer back the next day that confirmed slings added Str bonus to dmg as they are considered thrown weapons, but the rest of the stuff has seemingly disappeared into a black hole.

I don't know if the questions were too hard or not.

Actually you can get criticals with several types of wands or staves. Any spell that requires an attack roll can critical. This includes: any ray spell (Ray of Cold), and energy missile (Flame Arrow), and any touch spell (Inflict Serious Wounds).

Wands and staves can be enchanted with any of these spells, and therefore get threat range of 20, and will critical if you roll it.

A fav of mine is to make an archer/sorcerer with ray of cold. That spell can get pretty cool with alot of ranged combat feats. Check out the Tome and Blood for more critical with spell info.

I'm curious... which feats?

Point Blank Shot. Weapon Focus (Ray) and Weapon Specialization (Ray). Precise Shot.

1d3+3 is pretty cool?

(Or was "cool" just a Ray of Frost pun?)

I gave up on 'custserv@wizards.com' a long time ago - their responses were not only less informative then the answers I'd get from picking Scrabble tiles, but less interesting.

I wish I still had a copy of some of the email I got from them; a close paraphrase follows:

Me: "On page 68 of the Monster Manual, Ancient red dragons are listed as having 'find the path' in the chart, but 'eyebite' in the text. Which is correct?"

Wizards: "It depends. I'd say yes."

Note that this response took over a month to come...

Edit: As I now recall, the response wasn't capetalized and didn't include punctuation, like this:
**
it depends
i'd say yes
**
or something along those lines.

all the prestige classes a side.... take info out of PHB.

If I was using "spirited charge" feat with my heavy lance and and rolled a 18 and hit... I would do 1d8 + modifiers x3.

If I rolled a 20 (threat) and then rolled a hit. would I then do (((1d8 + modifers))X3) X3

example. max 8 + (6 "various modifiers") =14 X3 = 42 X3= 126

is this correct.... if not where did I go wrong
