Here's my issue. My weekly gaming group lost a few members. Last year we lost one and recently this year two more. We're down to 4 total members: a DM & 3 players for RPGs. I've never been comfortable with fewer than 4 players when I DM, and I actually prefer to have about 6 players (even 7). I run pre-printed modules (mostly from Dungeon magazine), and most are written with a group of 4 PCs in mind. Plus, we're all busy people and sometimes miss a session. I also find the groups do better with more players. We're probably down to 2 DMs at this point, and the game I'm currently running will likely end this week.
So, I've been considering what to offer to DM next. One idea was to take several things I really like and throw them into a sort of d20 blender. I have really enjoyed the Shackled City Adventure Path and want to run it. My players love classic D&D, but it bores me quickly. I like to run a core D&D game; but I really like other d20 games too, especially those set in different genres. I also have concerns about only having a maximum of 3 PCs for any given week. One player suggested that he and other players just run 2 PCs, which got me thinking. I am now pondering running the Shackled City adventures with each player running 2 PCs. Their first character must be a Judge Dredd Street Judge or Psi Judge; or a Star Wars Jedi Consular or Jedi Guardian; or an Omega World Pure Strain Human Explorer or Mutant Human Explorer. Their second character may be any of the foregoing or any race & class combination from the Player's Handbook. I'm also tempted to allow Aasimar paladins (with no ECL) because I want to encourage good guys & paladins.
I am really excited about this idea. I think my players can handle it as they are all 20+ year veterans of RPGs as am I. The first tier PCs would be sort of magically transported into the D&D world & adjusted for game mechanics. The second tier PCs may be indigenous to the Cauldron area. I really want to see how these classes from different d20 games play together, and I think that dynamic would keep me interested enough to run the 11 modules in the series (if I make it that far).
Any thoughts?
Failing this idea, I'll probably offer to continue a Judge Dredd d20 game that ended after the Sleeping Kin.
