Critters on the ceiling

Yeah. The party survived this one although the Players bickered with each other a bit about tactics afterwards. I am always surprised by the lack of reach weapons in the campaigns i've played in. My multi-class halfling even carries one around to be able to poke at the big baddies before moving in close with his blades.

Thanks everyone for all the responses here.

One of the characters tried to claim that this was a little unfair to the melee fighters because each individual only takes up a 5' cube and couldnt actually reach the dragon without jumping.
Being able to reach a dragon (i.e. flying creature) via jumping actually seems like a luxury.

Wow. It's been years since I learned better than to build a character without any ranged weapons. The last one was a dedicated 2-weapon fighter whose only ranged capability were about a dozen daggers that he'd wield in his off hand and throw as necessary. And even he wised up and kept a looted crossbow after about half a dozen sessions.

Basically, those players need to get smart, and realise that intelligent opponents will exploit their weak spots. Especially something highly mobile like a dragon.

Well, it's understandable if they were new. Most people only need to get strafed to death by flying baddies (or undergo any embarassing death) once before grasping the concept.
