Cthulhu Dark Fantasy?

Amazon UK Shipping to US

How does that work on s&h to America with Amazon.
If you check the Amazon UK site, it's just two pounds per book plus three pounds per delivery. An extra ten bucks for a couple books might seem like a lot, but you're getting books you can't get in America.

So is anyone out there would would enjoy something like Cthulhu Dark Fantasy instead of Cthulhu 1930s Pulp? Maybe they could take the best of the stuff from old Robert E. Howard and work on that?

Take a look at Warhammer RPG (not the wargame). It is probably the "original" Dark Fantasy game system & setting. Chaos encroaches upon the world, horrible beasts in the wilds, evil cultists, gotta love it. :D

There is a "Warhammer d20" thread on this forum where the debate has been going on between whether WHRPG's feel would "port" to d20 mechanics. I am of the opinion that the original game's mechanics do a lot for the feel of the setting, and d20 isn't well-suited for it. Even if you didn't play the exact game or setting, though, there are a lot of good ideas there. Worth a read.

.

Unless you don't count Stormbringer from Chaosium which predated even the WHoriginal boxed set that had an RPG booklet by 2 years or so. :D

That being said, yes WH RPG is a way cool setting....

Has anyone had a chance to play a D&D game without D&D magic, but with CoC magic instead?

I was going to. But I didn't want the players to be limited on what classes they could choose. Of course, half of the players decided they wanted to be spellcasters in one form or another.
So I added CoC magic to D&D magic. I had to keep game balance so it would be fair to every class.

Peace and smiles :)

This dark fantasy is something that interests me a lot but I think some type of mix would have to be reached on the magic aspect. Without better magic some dramatic decrease in monsters would be needed to keep heroes out of their homes while they recovered...

Part of this can be overcome with proper use of NPCs who have healing abilities either through PrCs like the Surgeon from Broadsides or herbalistic rules from various companies. Of course the healing won't go as fast, but that's part of the appeal.

I'd probably knock down the Massive Death rule too. Probably make it 20 points or something. Make the characters think twice about fighting.

Of course might be a perfect tiem to run some more rules from Wheel of Time like armor defense bonus since most of these eras don't have full plate and other types of main protection armor.

Last I heard it was Stan Lee Media, though with their Chapter 11 it may have been sold. It used to be COnan Properties.

Hi All,

I too heard that Clark Ashton Smith's work is public domain. Can anybody confirm this?

Thanks,
Rich

If you're willing to create lots of variant classes, I think you can get by with just Fighter, Rogue, and Expert.

How do you maintain a dark fantasy feel with normal D&D spellcasters?
