Cthulhu Modern?

I agree simpler is better for CoC. Do you think all the right skills are there? I have been toying with seperating a "Library Use" sill from "Gather Information," since the first strikes me as research and the second strikes me as obtaining info from people.

Has anyone added or changed the d20 CoC skills to make it more like the original game?

Clark,

Actually I like that skill split. Mind if I borrow it? :D

I personally have not made any modifications to bring it a bit closer to BRP. But I think D20 could use a "specialization" type mechanic for some skills..gather information being one...you could have "streetwise", "library use" ,"Internet research", etc. etc. I guess you could group those under Knowledge skills and just use different ability scores for the skill modifier to keep things simple (charisma for Streetwise, Wis or INT for Research, etc...)..it would make skill points at each level a bit more valuable as well.

Or on an individual basis with each player you could use the Lejendary Adventure approach where you sit down and decide whether the character has a broad but shallow understanding, or a greater, but much more narrow focus about a certain facet or facets under the skill.

In my opinion the skills in d20 Modern are much better thought out than the skills for CoC d20, but they really are two different genres. Choose d20 CoC if you want a feel closer to realism - character death is quite real in this game. d20 Modern's death rate, based only on the rules I have read but have not yet played, seems somewhere between Dungeons & Dragons, and the Alternity game.

The basic chargen is where I think you'll find the most difference in feel or flavor. CoC characters have squat for special abilities, while d20M characters have some decent ones. So for that, it very much depends on what you're trying to capture. Concerning firearm combat, I find d20M firearm combat to be far more simple than the system used in d20 CoC, so I recommend using Modern. I don't really understand the comment about separating a Library Use from Gathiner Information. LU is covered by Research, and I haven't made any skill changes. Ultimately, barring chargen, I doubt that it will matter too much for the flavor of your game which system you use. As long as you keep the Sanity rules and magic rules, you shuold be good to go either way. :D

Dead on. That's what I was trying to say, just simpler. in this respect, CoC d20 really feels like its predecessor.
