D&D 5E Curse of Strahd - is it essentially a 5e expansion of I6?

I figured I'd ask in a new thread so I don't have to go and re-read all of the threads. I remember someone saying that Strahd's castle will be a lot like his castle in I6, with most of the new material being the castle's environs. Is this confirmed? I think this would be a good approach; tweak and polish the original I6 (add to it where necessary), and dedicate most of the new material to fleshing out the surrounding territory. It would also be good if they designed it so that, say, a 7th level party could play the adventure by skipping the environs and going straight to the castle.

Maybe.

It sounds like I6 with additional sidequests and content for levels 1 to castle time.
Or it could be a sequel/expansion that is treated as a return.

But really, we don't know yet.

From what I can tell it's a script switch in that the PCs start off working for strahd with various side quests before turning on him a la I6. So essentially what you said but a bit of a roundabout way of doing it.

Annoyingly I just started my lot on a 5e conversion just before the new broke of the release...dagnabbit.

From the podcast it seems like they took I6 and really expanded Barovia for starters including some form of Haunted House and a Windmill location. Physically Barovia also appears to be bigger (the valley area as well as the mountains). They also gave suggestions for multiple ways of getting the party to Barovia.. I think they are generally pushing the non native angle. In the original I6, you got to Barovia via the starting tavern.. I hope its similar here.

I'm actually curious whether they used any of the expansion material for the Barovia environs that they already had made in both Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, and the Fair Barovia adventure in Dungeon Magazine.

The former gave us the ruins on Lysaga Hill and the caves in the Ivlis Marsh... while the latter gave us a second town, Vallaki, as well as a monastery up in the mountains.

Im only going on what Ive heard. We have the 'Death House' which Im guessing is a Haunted house either in town or just outside of it and a Windmill. No clue where that will be.. but Im going with Creepy Field of Wheat and Scarecrows. a Monastery wouldnt be too much of a Stretch but I think this is a direct expansion on the original I6 than anything that came after.

To be honest, Im not even sure that Ravenloft as a multi domain entity exists in this 'reboot'. It could be just Barovia or Barovia.

Grassy, someone has already put a 5e conversion of I6 on the web, if you're interested:

I6 - Ravenloft converted to 5e in time for Halloween!
