Custom Artifact Creation

So my DM says that we as players can make one custom artifact that could be introduced to us later in the campaign. He wants us to be able to tie it into the storyline of the campaign by having a good backstory that fits with ours. I'm working on something Like Whelm with a Crusader's Weapon theme added to it. I already have it made and printed and I have my DM's ok to use IF I can somehow link it to me or the story in some way.

The basic theme is that we're trying to kill Orcus when we reach epic level. One character is a cleric of pelor and she'll have a soulsword. Another is an assasin who will use the Skull of Sartine.

I'm a goliath warden. I'm from the Tigerclaw tribe close to hammerfast.
Can you do anything from there?

My cleric PC has a custom artifact that was his mentor's blade. The blade was lost when the mentor was killed (my character was 8 at the time) and my PC ultimately recovered it 22 years later in the Shadowfell.

If you can't find a link to the item, find a link to the bearer instead.

Yeah as Colmarr says, there's all kinds of ways to do this. Maybe the artifact belonged to a mentor, or an ancestor of your character.

Or, maybe it serves as a symbol of "office" so to speak, such that when you reach Epic level (or high paragon or whatever), the weapon is bestowed upon you. This could be done through the tribe, or through your character's benefactors, etc. As an example, in the game I'm running, I am going to be giving the Avenger a sentient falchion that will upgrade over time. The falchion will be bestowed upon him by the Church as part of ascension to his paragon path. I'm tying the choice of this particular weapon into the story line as well, with the background being that the flachion is given out only at the most dire of times, etc.

Maybe your warden's order has something similar, or the tribe does, etc. Lots of possibilities here, but its hard to get into too many specifics without knowing more about your character. What makes him tick? What paragon path is he taking? What epic destiny? etc. etc.
