D&D 4th Edition Next Year?

You forgot: "9. Rasyr pops in and posts copius arguments to show us that, yes, 4e will be out [current year + 1-2]." :)
:p

Actually, I don't think I ever said [current year +1-2]. IIRC, I said that depending on certain factors/decision made at WotC, that I expect it in either 2006 or 2008 (and somebody with search capabilities could verify that I have been saying this since shortly after 3.5 came out), though others have convinced me that there is possibly a good arguement for 2007 as well. Personally, I hope we do not see 4e until 2010 (which is what I expect the original development cycles called for), but what I want/hope for doesn't enter into things.

In other words, I haven't been using sliding dates, I have remained consistant (and I have never said that I might not be wrong either). :D

And I've got John Wick and Bruce Baugh telling me the same thing over in a thread on RPG.net.
The former actually said he knows for sure that it's produced at the moment and will be released next year. Just ask him :D.

Hehe. Sorry, Rasyr, I couldn't resist.

The problem is that the former is generally full of !@it.

You think I should have added a qualifier to the message ;)?

Maybe this: Confronted with Charles Ryan's statement that D&D has 4.6 million players in the US in 2005, John kept talking about how obviously wrong this claim for 4.6 million sold PHB's is :D! Perhaps, this helps ;).

This said, it's a rumor thread. And rumors like to be spread :).

Well, a way to counter some of the rumors is to check on the upcoming product list. From what I have seen on these boards, there are many new 3.5 products scheduled to be released next year.

As for when a new edition should be released, I would argue there are some signs that it is time for a new edition:

It would require a 25 strength in real life to lift up all the non-campaign specific rule books.

Every possible product has been released and we are looking at upcoming releases of "Cheeses of the Realms."

Dirigible's predictions seem to have been wildly optimistic in retrospect, as the last supplement produced for D&D 3.5 is "Godzilla, Cthulhu's Big Brother, and the Smurfs vs. the Great-Great Grandson of Drizzt'Do Urden, Werewolfminster, Crashbangboom the Warforged Vacuum Cleaner, and the Dodecahedron of Eighty-eight: The Expanded Miniatures Rules for the MegaModule." :D

Actually, Cheeses of the Realms was published for 2nd Edition AD&D in 1992, under the name "Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog".

Seriously, pages 122 to 127 were nothing but a detailed listing of 15 different cheeses from around the Forgotten Realms, lengthy flavor text, prices, game stats (for the Luiren Spring Cheese, a cheese that is addictive and hallucenogenic to halflings).

(Yes, I know you were being silly, but I just had to point out that "Cheeses of the Realms" has already been done :) )

Although I would argue that just having a lot of books in print isn't a good reason to create a new version of the core rules. Developments in game design, play style, and improvements on prior failings or shortcomings of the system are good reasons for an overhaul of the core system.

An abundance of suppliments is just that, plenty of optional books. Think they are encumbering? Don't haul them around. You can do lots with just the Core 3, and with just a handful more you could run games for many years. If Expanded Heroes of Legacy is bogging you down, don't use it!

I was being somewhat tongue in cheek. I think that one of the problems at the end of 2nd Edition is that there were different groups operating under very different rules. A 2nd Edition campaign could include the core rule books, or the Skills and Powers books. (There was a lot more difference between the 2nd Edition core rule books and the Skills and Powers vooks.)

Mind you, I think the core books can be used without supplements. I also agree on the reasons you stated to do an update to a rule set. No edition is perfect, and there are always new ideas out there.

As for Cheeses of the Realms, there could always be a post-Time of Troubles update. (Shadovar Cheese is very effective for those who wish to lose weight --- as it has some traits of the Plane of Shadow. Just don't call it light cheese. ;) )

But I'm sure you'd like to have the "Death Cheese" in full color and hardcover :)!
