D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Greyhawk, City of Thieves

Davis returns Samara's handshake a little hesitantly. He's not exactly sure where he lost control of this whole conversation, but he clearly had. The man accusing him of being a coward, or not caring about others, he wasn't quite sure which, upon reflection. And he had somehow angered Samara, who now accused him of being a murderer. He was committed to two separate quests, damned by his own tongue, with no idea the full scope of either. Shaking his head at his own foolishness, he trails diffidently behind Arion, somehow caught up in the man's wake.

Helmut puts down his tankard and stares at the elf with barely concealed amazement. Do people like this really exist?, he thought to himself. As he reaches out his hand to keep the elf from coming to close, he hears Curly interject from next to him at the bar. To Mialee, he says ”It seems like fortune has found us. Now what mood she’s in, we’ll have to see.”

“Elf,”
he says to Arion, “I don’t know what you’ve been drinking, but I highly doubt you’d be a match for someone matching the description of Grob.”

“Now you, on the other hand,”
and he turns to face Curly, “You look like you know your way around a weapon. I’ve fought creatures like this with the army. They hit hard, but if you keep your wits about you they can be brought low. If you’re serious about taking down Grob, I say we team up. There’s plenty coin to share, if the elf is right, and coin is worthless if you’re dead.” ([roll0]) He turns and looks again at Arion pointedly as he says this last.

OOC: I suppose I should have clarified your options for dealing with NPC adventurers (should you choose to accept them).
  • 1) Accept him as a full-fledged member of the party. In this case, he receives a share of experience and a share of the treasure (however fair distribution of treasure is agreed within the party), and is otherwise treated as full member of the party. No check is required.
  • 2) Take him on as a hireling (henchman). First, you must offer him a wage, then you must make a Charisma (Persuasion) check. The order of the offer/check is important, as you do not know the result of the check before you make the offer, and difficulty of the check will depend upon the offer. For reference, the standard wage for a skilled hireling such as a man-at-arms is 2 gp per day (for a 1st-level hireling). A hireling receives a share of experience for encounters he takes part in, but not treasure. A hireling's wage will become part of your lifestyle cost for as long as the hireling is with your group. This additional cost can be divided among the group if you desire.

Either way an NPC adventurer can eventually become a player-controlled character, either as a replacement for a resting, retired, or deceased PC, or as an additional character.

”And what is the wager?”

"You come across a fork in the road. Which path do you take?"

”No one comes here who’s not looking for adventure of some sort. What kind of adventure are you looking for?”

Mialee looks a bit up and to the right as she thinks.

"Oh me? I'm just looking for fresh blood for some forlorn vampire queen. She lived among the elves. Hung around with some tall white haired Paladin. The Paladin fought against some ugly but brilliant chaos beast and his army of mindless black puddings. I need to find someone that can kill the black puddings so I can convince the chaos beast to give me the Paladin so I can return him to my lady. It's all more boring than it sounds, I assure you."

Mialee seems far too excited and cheery at this prospect with a couple drinks down.

"A quest to slay a giant? Oh that'll make a fine song. And when he picks you up by your little heads and smashes them between his fingers it'll go squish squish squish."

She seems only halfway aware of the dangerous nature of this prospect.

Arion was astounded as to how well this was going, true his share of the reward was diminishing but his chances of collecting we improving markedly.

"Well, jokes aside my friends it seems there are six of us who have the courage and nobility to go after this foul creature." he nods to the now assemble members. "As to the reward, I suggest an equal share for all which would come to..."

Counting on his fingers and mumbling "...carry the one.." He states with finality, "That comes to 83 each with two for a round of drinks afterwards."

"Now, our big militant friend here," he guestures to Helmut with a friendly smile. "Has brought up the point of credentials. Shall I start?"

There is a slight pause but he quickly rolls on, trying not to lose momentum.

"I am Arion Wenter, I normally act as a scout and have a most useful mechanical aptitude as well. Despite the dispersions; I am quite handy with my weapons and would certainly hold my own. I am also something of a historian and seeker of rare antiquities."

The girl curtsies and can't help but smile as she introduces herself more formally. She flourishes six cards in her hand that she draws from somewhere [roll0] and explains, "I am Mialee. Worshipper of Fharlanghn. Dancer. Entertainer. Gambler. I may not look like much to the untrained eye, but I am skilled in a few little things. I have many talents." She flicks the cards between her hands with a bit of a flourish. "Not the least of which is my luck. I am decent with a blade and better with a harp... and I have learned minor illusions and the ability to mend wounds. Perhaps I am a bit of a jack of all trades, but a master of none."

Davis diffidently offers his own introduction, following the style of the others.

"I am Davis Grey, an explorer and an arcanist of a subtle sort. I may not be the most powerful in a direct confrontation, but my magics and skills may be of use in tracking or preparing ourselves against the creature." He pauses in contemplation and touches his hand to his pack where his spell book lies. "Or if Grob sees fit to bring his own allies."
