D&D 5E D&D and who it's aimed at

It's like people wanting to go 'back to old school' forgot what 'old school' actually entailed instead of the mechanical parts harvested off it for the OSR movement.
I still don't remember how our party maintained the F-14s we got from a jaunt to the real world (or how my Dwarf and Halfling were able to see out let alone know how to pilot them)...

And, frankly, obviously neither does WotC. The last three adventures all feature slavery, genocide and etc.
Yeah, maybe we'll see about that. I've been following Dark Sun threads on Twitter. You have plenty saying you can't do it because of the slavery, but I was watching a thread by a prominent tweeter who contended you could do it if you replace slavery with "systemic oppression and inequity." While neither are laughing matters, it still makes me chuckle reading those words. The lead editor of an upcoming project weighed in on that thread.

There are outspoken members of the D&D audience who feel that any "reminder" of slavery is harmful or even outright violence against marginalized peoples. In my opinion, Wizards agrees with that take and they've been trying to cleanse their fantasy settings of this content. They're never as good at ferreting it out as the Vassar grads, because they're by-and-large a bunch of middle-aged white guys. Sometimes "mistakes are made," such as the "colonialist language" that snuck into that grippli adventure you cite and that caused such an outrage.

We've had all these discussions before. It's a little odd that the same people who defend the changes in those discussions are here now saying, "What? Huh? There's no 'sanitization'? What are you even talking about?" Come on, man. Can't we argue about whether the sanitization is on-net good or bad without the gaslighting?

I don't . . . I don't think that Spelljammer will in any way, shape, or form be less goofy than Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel. I mean, from what we know, the newer Spelljammer books will have Vampirates and Space Clowns. While the art for the Radiant Citadel has had some cute creatures and bright colors in it . . . I seriously doubt that it would be more goofy than Spelljammer. I'd be surprised if it was even a tenth as goofy as Spelljammer.
There's nothing cute, fluffy or goofy about Tryranohamsterous Rex. Nothing!!!! And Wooly Rupert? :shudder:

Spelljammer is nothing but serious stuff.

I mean, not really for me, but I'm rather biased on that specific front.
Here's the thing. You have no problem with Conan, for your reasons, I have no problem with Conan, for my (possibly different) reasons, it's a style and presentation of Fantasy as old as it gets, and yet we both understand, for reasons we may or may not agree with, that that style is being removed from the game.

Don't like 'disneyfication' don't like 'sanitation' don't like 'defang' don't like 'safe' don't like 'childish' or tame, or well anything as a description of this process, fine, but we all know it's happening.

It's not because Conan (the style) is misogynistic that we don't get stuff like that anymore.

It's because of the market being aimed at, and their reaction to that style, as evidenced in this thread, in reaction to the I believe, Conan movie poster image.

So remove all the hand wringing and accusations, and insinuations.

Everyone on both sides has their own personal line in the sands over what is or isn't acceptable, what is or isn't a marketable style, or tone.

But let's at least be honest here, we aren't going to get that 'diversity of style' that pushes Conan back into the limelight, and it has nothing to do with 'everyone' being on board with that and the many other shifts towards a gentler, softer, more generally inoffensive tone.

As far as inspiration and catching the feel, was the standard "party" size one or two in most of Sword and Sorcery in Appendix N? (Conan, Fafhrd and Mouser, Cugel, Elric ?),

People saying Dark Sun won't happen because slavery have obviously forgotten that the Underdark continues to exist unabated. The entire point of the biome appears to be a place to stock slavers, slave races, former slaves and lamer gnomes. If that garbage gets to keep flying, I don't see how it would stop DS more than the complete antipathy toward trying with psionics would.
