D&D as a smorgasbord

My standard model:

"Anything Goes" -> "What you chose is common."
That is a really interesting way to encourage mechanical & cultural diversity (across games) while still cutting off the guy who only wants to be a half-goliath giantspawn dragonboob farblood for the implicit "loner cred".

Hmm.

...I've never really heard many people preach the virtues of cherry-picking; loading up your plate with hand-selected options, smorgasbord style, and creating a game milieu that way.

Given the nature of my game, a 3.5e campaign set beneath the surface of the sea, I only use bits and pieces of the rules anyway. Even Stormwrack has quite a bit of piratey goodness which I relegate for NPC use only. However, since I set PC restrictions to characters with a natural swim speed the ability to breathe underwater without the use of magic, I allow quite a few other elements to enter the game; psionics, incarnum, warlocks, Tome of Magic, and the like.
