Kalashtar and Awsimar can work well as subraces of the same race.

That is a good point, they could have built a roughly human-looking "an outsider on my shoulder" race with subraces for different outsiders. Ah well, maybe for 6e. I will probably just treat the quori as having moved to Bytopia or Elysium and guiding the kalashtar as a way of paying the rent.

Is it just me or do 5e Aasimar steal some if the Kalashtar's turf with Guardian Angels?
Just you.

IMHO, Kalashtar are utterly alien in a way that is something other than what we see with aasimar. I recall reading, for example, how a limited number of good quori merged with their human hosts, but the number of human hosts now outnumber the number of good quori. So the spirit of these quori are split among the various kalashtar. What's more, these immortal quori are constantly sharing their memories of Dal Quor with their human hosts. But this also means that kalashtar who share the same quori spirit will often feel more like family than their actual blood relations.

So this is not a case of having a guardian spirit on their shoulder, but almost akin to a person constantly reliving and being reminded of a past life in an alien landscape.
