OK peeps,
many 'gamers' are also 'video gamers'. As the current gamer population spans quite a large age group (teens to 60's for some) the new 'target audience' apparently, is the college level and above crew.
All of *us* have kinda of grown up with both D&D and advanced video games.
We've been there from 1e and 'Joust' to 3.5 and 'King of Fighters 2003'.
Both genres seem to be at the baser levels related. It's entertainment, usually there are the elements of fantasy and in some cases role play. (don't try to tell me that those really super intense korean guys who play KoF don't "THINK" that they are the character they use....) [note: i am not making a racial statement, just a statement. for the record i'm not a racist, i am an ethnic minority myself with steriotypes ranging from the lovable shopkeep Apu to that guy from the movie "office space"]
At some strange points of time we've developed role playing games based off of the campaign worlds of 2d one on one fighting games (like the street fighter game, etc). On the other hand we had two offical D&D arcade games (where various people can play, up to 4 / machine, and battle hoards of similar looking baddies, and 'bosses' all the while gaining levels). ALso the reinvention of the Gauntlet game which came out was pretty cool . . . but why stop there?
Am I the only one who's lusted (i mean it) for a one on one 2d (or 3d) fighting game based on D&D?
I'm talking 'street fighter / mortal combat / KoF' meets 'D&D / FR ...'.
Why FR, and not basic D&D, etc? Well, it is a legit brand name, with books (possibly also tv shows?) and is kinda a flagship for the new direction Wizards is going. THey should bank on it, especially with it's archetypes.
Also I know I want to put in 25 (or even 50) cents a pop to kick Elminster's ass. (and that Drizzt too....)
I guess it's something for the FR lovers and FR haters at the same time then.
The D&D coin-op was pretty cool in how you could name your character and so forth, this isn't that hard to implement in 'character creation / selection'. But that's if you do the whole "it's not iconics / people like drizzt / danilo thann whatever...". There could be levels as well (characters are stored on the memory board of the machine, not unlike NBA Jam used to do), and a whole bunch of other stuff. I doubt multiclassing would work though.
The other side is using the just popular people, and fleshing them quite a bit.
eg. using the Character of Halaster:
(using the joystick here)
Back, Down+Back, Down, Down+Back, Back, Down+Back, Down, Down+Forward, Forward + any primary row buttons (like street fighter, 6 buttons, 3 on top, 3 on the bottom) = one of his signature spells.
eg. using the Character of Artemis Entreri:
(blocking an attack and parrying with his magical dagger)
Back (this is basic block), Down, Back, Down+Back, any bottom row button (for two weapon fighters, top row is primary hand, bottom row is off hand).
then go into a combo/ripost using his magical dagger to do the life drain ability:
down, down+forward, forward, down, down+forward, forward, down, down+forward, forward, any lower row button = life drain with magical dagger (restores some of your HP from opponents hp)
--------------------------------
obviously two very dumb examples.
again, the scope for this game would have to be severely refined. you can't have the 'create a character' portion if you also have all these realms superstars about. (not balanced at all....)
i don't think the stats or rolling up of a character is possible in the create a character version of the game either. people just want to put in their quarter and start fighting, not wait for 4 re-rolls for the stats, then spend all day picking out clothes for the character. (no, this isn't THe Sims)
there was this game called "sango fighter" or something like that. shareware if i remember. fun game. it incorporated fighting various NPC's and bosses / stage. you could do all those fun super moves and stuff on no name chumps. perhaps for the 'create a character' idea of the game they could make each stages more like a scenario. fighting dumb grunts (xp anyone?) then having to face a boss.
perhaps that's too much like the fully 3d new Gauntlet Legends game.
or they could just scrap all of that, and make it with the iconics. (fully making some of the less combat / spell classes kinda not so fun . . . gimble would get his ass handed to him by lidda, but i think he'd like that)
i'd suggest making the game 2 / machine. (while the concept of the option for a 2 vs 2 game seems interesting, i don't think it would really work out that well. we already know how it feels to have the party mage blast us with a fireball by accident, i don't need to put in quarters to find out how it feels)
regular 8 direction joystick. 6 buttons (we're used to the strong/medium/quick button assignment). different for different characters/classes of course. one level of health/HP. another for class based abilities (usually something which replenishes after a period of time on it's own . . . otherwise who's going to stop the mage who constantly uses meteor storm all day?). also something like a super state or guage or whatever that alot of games like this have. (how you can save them up and perform a super move / despiration move when your hp is low or whatever)
a wizard will have things like a weak kick or a hand slap as the weakest two buttons (one on each row) the other ones would be for conjuring and so forth. the spell you cast is dependant on (of course, your level) and the joystick combination you use. also it's effects would be dependant in the different guages you have. (KoF fans would understand this)
on the other hand, a monk would have many different attacks, much more like what we're used to for a fighting game, but no spells to cast. the monk would be able to do the stunning fist, or flury of blows and all those other things though. throws, and what not.
of course the fighter with the sword and board when performing a throw is actually a sheild bash. while the fighter with the finesse moves may go for a trip or disarm.
then again, maybe it's just better to be a cleric, who can heal wounds with his magic spells (btw, i'm really skirting the mana issue).
bards useless? possibly, but they'd be more jack of all trades, not so much short gnomes with name changing ways. they'd be quick, be able to fight a bit, and cast a bit, while having a wide assortment of moves.
rogues, sneak attack is fun, i guess. probably make more sense if it was a 2v2 game or something with flanking comming into play though.
somehow i'm sure rangers would get the shaft.
druids could wildshape of course. but i don't care if you can turn yourself into a bear, you have to watch out for the button mashing 12 year old who plays a barbarian with a two handed sword and only uses two buttons.
tell me what you guys think, add comments. try to be creative and constructive -- if i wanted to get dissed i would have talked to my wife about this. (not a gamer or a fan of video games either... but boy, does she ever know her gilmore girls...)
