I realize that the difference is one of perceptions rather than actualities, but it seems that there are a number of people who either buy only official D&D products, and those who buy only D20 products aside from the core books. (I lean a bit toward the latter myself.)

How common is this perception? How common is the practice?

I am not quite certain how common the perception is, but I will admit I am one that leans heavily towards the official D&D products (which I have openly admitted before). My reasons are mainly due to time and money and the ability to keep up with even half of what is on the market today.

I certainly acknowledge there are good d20 products out there and do own a few PDFs and even an odd adventure here and there to help supplement my current games. Not having the time I used to, I tend towards the official products as it is easier for me to determine what I consider worth having and not worth having.

For me though there are so many options and such that I tend to limit my games to official D&D sourcebooks.

I almost put that on. :) I have seen that one before.

Heh, well, my players somehow manage to find the information they need between sessions though. I can't imagine how, since they don't own the books...not that I condone their actions. I can't stand it when people do that and play the game, since they are not contributing to the health of the industry...

I'm Other: I buy everything, and my players don't buy anything, not even the Core books.

I only have one player who buys books. Since I leave many books at the house we play at, I guess that would be why that player doesn't buy books... The other two have no excuse!

I only buy WotC books. This is really just because I don't buy many books, though. I've bought a few pdfs, but not in two or three years. I mean, of the Complete series I only own one.

WotC, non-WotC, it's all good AFAIAC.

I've indoctrinated my group to third party products, so no WotC-snobbishness there. However, one thing I have noticed: they are, for the most part, happy with the 3.0 class books and have not "upgraded" to the Complete Series.

I buy everything I like, but my friends only buy D&D stuff. The latter is not too surprising though, because they only buy very few books, if at all.

I'm not too concerned about mixing 3.0 and 3.5 stuff without conversion myself, so this is not an issue.
