Title? I don't need no stinkin' title.
The only crocs that are going to ever be associated to D&D for me look like:

I wonder if I can get my 14 year old daughter to play now.
There are two types of people when talking about RPGs/D&D. There are those that are genuinely interested in it when the topic is brought up and want to try it, and those you convince to try it. IME, the people that you convince to try it are the ones who usually dont come back. Just my observations over the years.

I can't get over the fact that the marketing picture has the Crocs holding open the pages of some rulebooks.

First of all, only savages weigh down their open rulebooks like that, breaking the spine.

Second of all, WHO PUTS THEIR SHOES ON A BOOK?!?!

Can we agree that for RPGs to flourish for the better it doesnt need to cater to the masses?

We would need to define "flourish" and "better", and agree upon those definitions, before agreement could be reached.

At its most basic - you may not find the game "flourishes" under some minimum number of sales, and that exceeding the sales threshhold requires appealing to very wide audiences.
