D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Wizards of the Coast is playtesting the Psion class for Dungeons & Dragons. Today, Wizards of the Coast provided a new Unearthed Arcana for the Psion, a new class for the current revised 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The playtest includes base class rules plus four subclasses - the body-shifting Metamorph, the reality warping Psi Warper, the offensive-minded Psykinetic, and the Telepath.

The core mechanic of the Psion involves use of Psion Energy die. Players have a pool of energy dice that replenishes after a Long Rest, with the number and size of the dice determined by the Psion's level. These psion energy dice can either be rolled to increase results of various checks/saving throws or spent to fuel various Psion abilities.

While the Psion and psionics have a long tradition in D&D, they've only received a handful of subclasses in 5th Edition. If the Psion survives playtesting, it would mark the first time that Wizards of the Coast has added a new character class to D&D since the Artificer. Notably, the Psion and psionics are also heavily associated with Dark Sun, a post-apocalyptic campaign setting that many considered to be off the table for Fifth Edition due to the need to update parts of the setting to bring it current with modern sensibilities. However, the introduction of Wild talent feats (which replaces some Origin feats tied to backgrounds with psion-themed Feats) in the UA seems to suggest that Dark Sun is back on the table.

I'm pretty much good with this. I like the Psykinetic subclass a lot, especially Empowered Attack Mode, which just a truly archetypal psion thing to do - hover uncannily in the air while throwing things around mentally or messing with foes' minds.

My only request would be for more psion-only spells - maybe about double what we have here - to really give the class a bit of its own character.

I agree. A few more unique spells would be great.

I'm warming up to this version a lot. Might not be exactly what I want, but it isn't hard to see what I want from where they are.

  • Weird that they still require Somatic components. My psion can cast spells naked in an area of silence, but needs to be able to wave their hands around to think their magic? Wonder why this choice was made...
Counterspell is my guess. I'm going to be removing somatic from psionic spells, but I'll be putting in something to indicate a psionic spell is being used.

I liked your thoughts on the rest of your post. Good job.

I'm curious why you think that given they just relaunched the core books last year.
I'll tell why I think that.

They are out of fresh popular ideas from the past to pull from.

5e creatively is sourced in bringing up the past's greastest hits. And it's one Volume #4.

Rereleasing what was printed already which is technically compatible is not going move numbers.

The only other beloved base class of the past after Artificer and Psion is what Warlord?
The number of popular settings who don't have a 5e book left are less that a handful.

5e needs to bring something bring and new or it runs outta ideas in 5 years.

The Psion might have extended it to 6 years.

Can you name a new KISS song from this century? Yet they routinely sell out stadiums and people get buried in branded KISS coffins.

There's nothing wrong with playing the hits.

The issue is hitting the same city too often.

Outside of their hometowns, bands don't hit the same city in short time.
FR, Eberron, Strahd. Those are the D&D band member's hometowns. The locals will pay to see those everytime and sell out.
Spelljammer? When the last Spelljammer book is compatible and not that old? You might have to cancel the show for not selling out the venue.

5e 2025 is not 6th edition. It's 5th edition revised.

Neither Tales of the Valiant or Daggerheart will replace D&D because they don't have the same appeal. MCDM's system might pull more people, but ultimately it will also be a niche since it's more crunchy. 5E is popular because is simple yet somewhat crunchy, which is easier to pick up by new players.

We also have the first 3PP setting/adventure launching next month for 2024 books with Crooked Moon from Avantris, so it's not all doom n' gloom.
