D&D digital licensing rights lawsuit settled

a) Highly unlikely, Bioware developed the Dragon Age IP precisely to avoid to negociate any rights. This is not the market that once was and all the big developers have no need of D&D IP (With the possible exception of Obsidian).

I totally agree. Bioware and the rest of the industry have largely moved on (Dragon Age, Oblivion, Crimson Alliance etc) but at least now the possibility is there.

At this point, I suspect the biggest opportunity for D&D is in social games. Some will shudder at the thought but if done well it could be a very fun game play experience

Licensed games are still profitable and desirable. The D&D brand has been damaged and lessened over time . . . but Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights are still valuable franchises, as is the larger D&D brand. As another poster put, all it will take is a kick-ass game, and a publisher willing to bet they are the right ones to make it happen.

Two words

Planescape Torment

This alone is worth getting the rights back.

I gotta say I am totally excited about the idea of a non Atari D&D video game. Most of the Atari games were cash grab garbage. I mean NWN 1 and TOEE were the only things they ever got even remotely right. And ToEE was crippled with bugs and pretty much unplayable after release, I remember waiting MONTHS for a patch to even make it stable enough to complete the game. I Bought NWN 2 but did not enjoy it.

But my favorite D&D games ever were the SSI games that used to come in the gold boxes. I have software to downclock my CPU and an emulator to run them in the correct environment and those games still get played to this day. That and the Westwood developed Dragonstrike (for DOS) which is still probably one of my favorite nonrpg D&D titles ever.

I wish the new company would play those games and give us something int he same vein of flavor.

love,
