BTW, I was perusing through the Profantasy forums and I noticed that someone has already started to use CC3 to build Keep on the Shadowfell. Their next project is going to be Thunderspire. Apparently they are also going to do Pyramid of Shadows. So you may be in luck.

Yes, i also found something similar on Cartographer's Guild. No doubt, i can find excellent flat maps with interesting features.

We've been using Dungeon Tiles in our 4E game lately, and I like them a lot. I also have a vinyl battlemat, but prefer the tiles for aesthetic reasons (the full color artwork is nice). I picked up a bunch of them on Amazon a while back when they were having a "buy 3 get 1 free" sale, so the price was even better.

I have two sets of the outdoor ones (Ruins of the Wild), and for interiors we've been using stuff from DU1 Halls of the Giant King, Set 2 Arcane Corridors, and Fane of the Forgotten Gods. If you decide to go with the tiles, the only set to watch out for is Dire Tombs. The tiles are fine but they have an Anceint Egyptian theme and are tan instead of gray, so they don't mix at all with the other sets.

Wow, thanks for the help everyone! Greatly appreciated.

That Dwarven Forge stuff is beautiful but a little outside my already strained funds. I'd like to get a set piece for an important encounter or something, but I could spend the same money on mats and tiles and probably get more utility out of my purchase.

Thanee, that thread of yours with the pics of the tile sets is awesome! Very useful in deciding what I should get first.

Hey, as for markers suitable for flip-mats, does anyone have any recommended brands? I've used wet/dry erase products in the past and I notice that, during an evening of repeated erasure, writing on that portion of the surface becomes difficult. It's almost like the ink isn't coming off the marker. For instance I bought that magnetic dry-erase initiative tracker from Paizo and after erasing PC/monster names from the magnets a few times (using paper towels) it becomes really difficult to write on them further. Am I getting oils from my skin on the writing surface? Should I drop the paper towels and use a rag or something? For such a simple process I seem to be doing something wrong!

I highly recommend the card stock stuff from fatdragon games and worldworks.

there are also a ton of great tiles available from skeletonkeygames, many you can get/try for free from them.

You'll need to print stuff out, and cut it, and make it....

I also use extruded styrofoam to make 3D terrain. There are plenty of good examples of this kind of work on the heroscape boards and wargaming terrain boards. I'll be posting pictures of some pretty easy to make stuff soon, probably on Hordelings....

I think its a case of the marker drying out. try recapping as soon and often as possible.

Yeah, I really like the stuff from Fat Dragon. I was gonna give Estlor some XP for pointing me out to them, but it looks like you get it Zaukrie!

I'm all about cutting & pasting (that's how I make most of my maps), and the Fat Dragon stuff would definitely enhance the look of my homemade maps, but first I think I need the flip-mats and tiles for "on the fly" situations. The Fat Dragon stuff is really afforadble though, and that GM screen is suh-weet IMO!

You might be right. I'm not sure what my cap etiquette was on the nights I used that init. tracker but I'll make sure to be vigilant in the future!

One thing I've come to is that I don't care if the terrain I put up matches the maps I've pre-made or the stuff in the module. Its about the fun for me, so sometimes I just wing the terrain.

Hersocape terrain is also very good, if you can handle using hexes instead of squares (though they are too big, you can work around that). Legos are also great for making walls and buildings, as is corrugated cardboard, popsicle sticks.

When buyin the dugeon tiles, i always cut out the pictures on the outside wrapping. They are 1 inch in size....I also use clear plastic from various items to use for windows. Don't throw anything away in your houst w/o fist asking how it could be used for terrain.

Fiery Dragon will be coming out with a 4e BattleBox soon. It will include a 17x22 dungeon floor battlemat and 3 pages of diecut dungeon dressing counters (stuff like columns, doors, etc). With those two resources you can create pretty much any room. Just use blank paper to "block out" the walls of the room and then place the dressings on it.
