D&D Fan Rewrites the 5E Player's Handbook Index

Yeah, the index is a running joke in my group.

Sorry, but I don't have time to contribute right now, but I'll be interested to see how this thread goes.

The biggest trick would be that EVERY page reference would also have to identify which book it refers to. So instead of:

Armor Class (AC), 7, 14, 144, 177

You'd have (I made up the DMG numbers):

Armor Class (AC), p7, p14, p144, p177, d16, d27, d105, d188

or maybe:

Armor Class (AC), PHB: 7, 14, 144, 177; DMG: 16, 27, 105, 188
The index in the 2nd Edition DMG covered both it and the PHB. Page numbers from the DMG were in boldface to distinguish them.

Oh I had forgotten about that.

I was planning to use bold to indicate the prime reference. Like when you see Armor Class (AC), 7, 14, 144, 177. Which is the MAIN armor class page? You don't want to have to check all of them to figure it out.

So maybe the "d" prefix for DMG, or italics or something?

I'm still not going to do it;) Too much work! But someone else could!

I've skipped several pages, but creating a good index is apparently a specialised job. I wonder if a professional indexer created the PHB index?

Noticed a couple of items: Resistance (line 1211 PHB Index Improved.txt) and Damage Resistance (line 368 PHB Index Improved.txt) show a reference to page 97. i believe it should be page 197 instead.

thanks again for this tremendous resource.

Thank you very much.

My group did find one small error. "chaotic evil (alignment)" is listed twice. Now THAT's chaotic!

Swimming

This is great! Thank you. If you do a future update OP, could you add "Swimming"? I know it is covered by the Athletics skill, but I have to flip pages to find the actual rule... unless it is in the DMG? Great job.

Cheapskate bum that I am (don't want to pay for ink to print pages that will become obsolete), I'm going to wait for this thread to drop to pg2 before I print my copy of the Useful Index For D&D 5e.

Thanks for volunteering to do some hard work, copperdogma.

When I print it out from the PDF and three-hole punch it, the holes punch out words. Anyone else having this same problem? Or maybe I've got a printer setting wacky?

I'm not surprised. I formatted it so you could print it out, trim off the right-hand 1/2", and slip it directly into the back of your PHB.

The Word doc is available on the site, too. Feel free to download that, adjust the margins, and re-print!

Yes! This is exactly the kind of feedback I want. I remember this being something I wished was in there, but I didn't write any of them down!

Thanks. I've updated all of the files with better swimming references.
