Failing to include the largest possible section of your market by disregarding best practices in favor of convinience means it is by definition not striving for excellence, yes.

Cutting corners very rarely produces excellence, in my experience.

That's what bugs me about it, too. It's really, really not hard.

It's much harder to develop a cross-platform client than using the single platform one you already have, though. They've stated one of the reasons is that they already have in house elements that use Direct X.
