D&D, I Renew My Vows to Thee

Addendum: I'm also glad they re-vitalized the Forgotten Realms, a campaign world near and dear to my heart as my first which was, unfortunately, Forgotten by me through the previous edition due to unseemly glut. It lost weight, got a makeover, and it's looking great!
Glut; hmm. I have to admit I find myself currently disaffectioned with the third edition Realms. I think its because the books are rather bland. It’s like that old saying. It's not about quantity, but quality. When the 3E Realms book came out I was really excited about it and was doing cartwheels. Now I realize that had more care been given and the Realmsian sweet spots (Al-Qadim) been nurtured, there might have been more support for it.

My current plan is to buy the 4E FR books, buy BOXM and blend it with Pathfinder and keeping the Realms mostly the same except for what absolutely needs to be changed to suit the flavor of the mix; Mystra definitely has to die. I'm hoping that this will give the Realms the kick in the arse it so desperately needs.

I'm with you on this Rev. I just couldn't get into the 3rd Edition version of the Realms. I only have the FRCS, Lords of Darkness, and the Waterdeep book. I just couldn't justify spending money on anything else for the 3e Realms; although, I hummed and hawwed over some of them like the epic book and the underdark book.

I almost bought the 4e Forgotten Realms campaign book today. It looks like a fascinating read and it appears to be not bogged down by too much 4e crunch. I'll likely take another look at it at some point in the future. If I get it, it will be to use with v.3.5 or the Pathfinder RPG.

Agreed Androlphas, and its a breath of fresh air to see someone post something positive about 4e, and in a humorous way. Kudos to you sir!

I was wary of 4e too. I had gotten really burned out on 3e, and had moved on to other systems completely about 4 years ago. When the preview books came out late last year, I figured I'd pick them up and see what was going on, but not expecting anything. Races and Classes was ok, but the Worlds and Monsters book blew me away! I had to know more! As the months passed and I learned more, I started getting excited about D&D again- much more excited than I did when 3e came out in 2000. When KotS came out, I bought it immediately and my group played it- and we fell in love with 4e (and I'm an entrenched simulationist DM). It strongly reminds me of the red box D&D and AD&D 1e- and I LOVE it! We haven't looked back since.

So 4e, I'm happy to reaffirm my vows and say I'm back too!

(Prediction: 10 posts until first threadcrap by one of the "usual suspects") :erm:

I actually doubt it. It... I dunno'... my prediction is that anyone who dislikes this silliness will either discount it or prefer to respect the opinions expressed to make a specific point. ...I hope that made sense.

I still don't see why there has to be D&D monogamy. Can't I play the field? Sure, the older women don't have anything that I haven't seen by now, but they can still teach the new girl a thing or two. I still have 1E and 2E's numbers in my little black book, and if I could find the players, I'd call them in a heartbeat.

Well, that's probably why the whole wife analogy to D&D editions is fundamentally flawed. A real woman (well, most of them) wants you to focus on her, and not share your focus with others.

But games don't care. They are objects. 4E isn't disappointed if you don't "play her" this evening, and prefer to run some 3E or maybe an entirely different game.

;)

I'm just trying to express my view and stay in the context of the running gag.

Ever since 4E came out, there have been alot of people who try to act like you can only play 3.5 or 4E--you can't play both for some reason. It's a view that I don't understand, but it seems to be widespread. I like both versions and am in campaigns with both. As I've said before, I'd still run 1E or 2E if anyone in my neck of the woods was interested in doing it.

So yeah, I'm firmly a D&D polygamist (I would say "player," but I'm sure that'd be confusing). They all do something for me.

Wait, you mean people don't really think D&D editions are women? ;)

Bah! Games are not women. They are dark gods, demanding blood sacrifices. Always telling you to troll the other dark gods' threads, looking for fresh new vir-- err... yes... umm... I, too, would like too... err... renew my D&D vows.

Aww... it's okay. We understand.
