D&D Iconic Characters

I have come to really like the concept of D&D having iconic characters (Mialee, Regdar, etc.). I think it adds continuity across their products and it binds them all together to say, "This is a 3E product."

I'll miss the iconics in 4E. A bunch of nameless, everchanging iconics just doesn't do it for me.

I'm just assuming the iconics won't be back.
There's a thread on that very subject at WotC's boards. The questions boil down to:
Iconics - Yay or Nay?

and if Yay, Old or New?

and if New, what do you suggest?

Here's my suggested party:
Dwarf Wizard, Male (yes, their culture is traditionally martial, as Gimli taught us all... but dwarves are also traditionally creators of magic weapons and items of unparalleled power)
Human Fighter, Female (this is the "joe average" point of view, the grounded character... he's Conan, Sir Lancelot and a dozen other main characters in books and movies)
Elf Cleric, Female (have them revere nature, the Moon or what have you... covers the nearly celestial Tolkien elves, the moon-worshipping WoW Night Elves, etc)
Tiefling Rogue, Female (the new race on the block, it even has "Thief" in the name! ;) ). Optionally, a Half-Orc Rogue also rocks.
Orc (or half-orc) Ranger, Male (the savage yet cunning hunter, a beast in humanoid form).

That being said, I'd love to design them... :D

Ny wish for the new iconics is to have names which sound original and individual, and not like two randomly-selected syllables thrown together.

There's a real tension in creating iconics. If you make them too generic, they're boring. If you make them too unique, they're not iconic.

That's beside the point though, I think its safe to say we'll see some kind of iconics in the future.

Does the buxom chain-mail bikini warrior count?

sure but lets give her a name..... Baby works.

Seriously, I hope there are new Iconics for 4e. Maybe even reoccuring VILLIANS also. Hint hint ;)

If the many posters on the WotC thread about this topic have had any say, then there will be a new bunch of Iconics for 4E. The idea of Iconics is fairly popular, even if the 3E iconics are not.
