D&D in the Military?

We signed in as a unaligned mercenary company.... We won the tournament but was accused of cheating for breaking Battletech traditions.

Thanks for the hilarious ancedote, Aries, fascinating! :) That kind of thing happens IRL too - "OK, we lost, but the enemy cheated! They ambushed us!" - both in real combat and in simulations, eg the notorious 2002 case where the US military wargamed a war with a crypto-Iran, retired Admiral Fallon played the crypto-Iranians and with a bunch of speedboats he sunk the entire US carrier fleet. So the top brass then declared the US fleet "re-floated" so the war game could continue!

When I spent a year in South Korea at Osan AB the group I was in played 12-hour sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

There is no official opinion of roleplaying. Obviously unofficially you may still get tagged as a geek but it generally isn't derogatory. All of the guys I played with over in Korea were married and were saving money by playing D&D rather than hitting the "Juicy Bars".

As far as it goes with playing with senior and junior ranking folks...

I was an E-5 and had a couple junior airmen who wanted to start a group with me. There was also a 1st Lieutenant in another squadron who wanted to play. The easiest way to allow this is to make it known that it is open to anyone. As long as we didn't bar anyone from joining then there wasn't the appearance of improper fraternization. The Lieutenant was always a bit paranoid but obviously that was because he had the most to lose. He wasn't in the direct chain of command of any of the people who played in the group.

I played while both stationed in Okinawa and New Orleans. Mostly on the weekend. And no, they don't care to much what you do in your free time as long as you aren't getting into trouble.

The military is rife with gamers. More than a few times over the years, I've been the only non-military or former military person in the gaming group.
