D&D Miniatures Defunct?

Blech

After the very nice minis in the Legendary Evils set, this set seems rather poor.

I'm seeing only one (Greenvise Vine) that looks very good, with one being good (Savage Minotaur), and the rest vary from average to quite poor.

It seems, WoTC just can't keep their color palette very vibrant.

There are an awful lot of minis which are resculpts of prior miniatures.

Ok, the Black Slaad looks good, and I can find a place for the Bulliwug Guard and Mud Lord (and that will give me a use for all those terrible frog miniatures), so that is an ironic plus. (Ironic because I'll bet a lot of folks just can't stand Bulliwugs.)

Ok, Ok, I can find a use for (Fallen Villager), which will be useful to indicate deaths, and I don't have enough of the Goblin Wolfriders, which are quite iconic. But otherwise I'm finding the set to be quite Meh.

Savage Encounters has a strong Shadowfell theme (after Legendary Evil's much brighter Elemental Chaos theme) so much of the color pallette on this set is fairly muted by the nature of the plane.

Also, the spoiler images are slightly muted in color due to poor lighting and bad color balancing. I stress slightly -- the subject matter does focus a little on blues, dark purples, and blacks.

Peter, the set looks like it has some real winners. But, the preview on the WotC site is pretty much invisible. Very bad design there. You have to go to a 2nd news page.

I like the fallen villager mini a lot. I remember how many people ripped the mushroom mini, and I think Auggie would tell you it was a real money maker for him....

Don't get me wrong here, I'm glad there are still minis coming out, but I don't see how I jumped the gun. If you go to wizards.com and click the D&D Minis link, this is the page you get: Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Archive

Click Home, and you get the D&D product page, which doesn't feature anything for DDM. I think I waited a good while for a bang.

As to minis themselves--pretty decent. Looks like we might have a foulspawn full house now.

I suppose I should know, but.....what is a "norker" (I mean beyond "someone who norks")?

Norker (hobgoblin) Distant relatives of Hobgoblins , Norkers are small, wiry humanoids. Their skin is from redish brown to dark grey.
They have no hair, just tough leathry skin

Mike Mearls wrote up a 3.5e version of them on Gleemax, which included a suggestion that some kind of magical toughening ritual had originally been done to goblins in order to make the first norkers. The original Gleemax post seems to be gone now, but is discussed tangentially here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/d-d-4t...d-4th-edition-status-effects.html#post3860634

And it looks like this little mini represents a dream come true for Mike:

Norker: My first week at WotC, back in June of 2005, I swore to get these guys made into a miniature so that I could run The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun with minis for every one of the mountain giant's followers. Sean Reynolds had done a version for the Living Greyhawk Journal, along with some really sweet art. I never did get a norker mini made, but I did get them into 4e in Thunderspire Labyrinth.

Although a lot of the Savage Encounters minis are pretty alien for my 3.5 game, I'm sure they'll look good and hopefully I can still find a use for them.

I've learned not to give too much judgment based on the previews. I wasn't excited at all about Legendary Evils, but when I opened the boosters and saw the quality of the minis, I was impressed. I liked them much more in hand. I have a feeling this will be the same with the next set.

I'm glad I wasn't alone in having difficulty in finding the minis page on the redeveloped WotC D&D website. The minis pages really have close to zero visibility currently. Unless I am missing something I couldn't see an easy way to get to the minis home page.

I still don't get why they still stick with this "Common/Uncommon/Rare" nonsense since they moved DDM from being a collectible minis game to just a minis set for D&D. That and there seems to be a slew of repeat figures in this set, again. Another Marilith, Drider, Nightwalker and Vampire?
