D&D Minis on the Decline?

I could always use a nice-looking bugbear.
I felt the bugbear gang leader was a fine mini, if a little over the top.

The 2.0 bugbear feels like like a step backwards.

Having invested in these things from the beginning (that is, Harbinger), I've got practically all the minis I'll ever need, so unless they start putting out AMAZING sculpts or common umber hulks, I seriously doubt I'll be spending any more cash on these things.

I have a killer set, though, so thanks wizards.

I have multiple complete sets, but I decided to stop supporting WotC when they cancelled Dragon and Dungeon magazines, announced 4E, and obsoleted most of my minis.

Errr - really? You won't be able to use the Green Dragon from War of the Dragon Queen in a 4E game? Also if you aren't buying 4E how on earth did your minis become obsolete?

This is the first time since Harbinger that my wife and I have NOT ordered two cases per set, and then picked up stragglers on Ebay. With that, here's why:

1) The new set offers almost no new figures we don't already have something for. I understand the hesitation of putting out figures for some of the more obscure monsters, but reprinting the same molds in slightly different poses again and again seems silly.

2) I'm not converting to 4E so the stat cards won't be nearly as useful to me as the ones I have now.

3) Storage space is becoming scarce for the mini collection we've been building since 1980.

I think I saw two minis from the new set I might try to get on Ebay, but the days of case-buying are over for us.

I think that if you just use the minis for use in D&D then its a case of how many more kbolds/gargoyles/zombies...etc, do you really need in every new expansion.

For people who play the miniatures game, theres a concern that the change from 3E to 4E rules is going to leave a shedload of minis that can't be used because theres no cards for them.

My personal opinion right now is that WotC should stop doing random boosters and go back to the old ways of doing blisters of individual figures (say a Bugbear chief) or blisters of four figures (say zombies or kobolds).

If you're new to collecting minis, then Dungeons of Dread seems to be an awesome set. It has all kinds of great minis in it. But if you've been collecting for awhile, then Rehash of Dread isn't going to be very impressive.

I really only collect 1 of each dragon. It's cool that a set has all these good dragons in it, but I don't need a remake of a dragon I already have. I'm not complaining though because a lot of people use more than 1 dragon in an encounter. I'm not too bothered by remakes of other minis because the variety is nice. If I only need 10 bugbears, and there's only 5 different sculpts, then I'll have duplicates of the same sculpt. But then when they release a 6th sculpt, I add the new sculpt in my collection and sell/trade one of the others.

My problem is just that we get all these remakes when we still don't even have other monsters. We have multiple remakes of some minis and still only 1 sculpt of others. It's wacky.

As an rpger my collecting habits haven't changed much and most 2.0 minis are still useful in any campaign. But I can totally understand a skirmisher player not buying as many since he won't use the old ones right now. But rather than not buying anymore, I'd think they would buy more while they're cheap. I predict once the old minis are converted to 2.0 then their prices will rise back up. Might as well take advantage of that now :)
