D&D Minis on the Decline?

currently the dollar is even lower than the Swiss francs
No way! Our dollar is just on a vacation at the moment. When it gets back everything will be back to normal and the dollar will be incredibly high as usual :heh:

(especially here in Europe, now that the dollar is weak).
Weak eh? Lets see you say that to the dollars face. He'll pound you like he did your old currency :p

I started around wardrums and I definitely don't feel the plasticrack like I did for the first few sets I bought.

But as someone who did not start with harb I can totally see why there are so many repeats, I mean a beholder, one of the iconic dnd baddies who many many many dms would want and a fun DDM fig to boot is crazy expensive for a piece of plastic. (got one on a lucky draw, but another story). Point is, there is a demand for new kobolds and men in plate mail even if you have all you will ever need.

I think the upcoming set is kinda fugly, I am into the 4.0 rules but way not into their art direction. I have played the 2.0 DDM rules and I like them better than the old ones. Losing the use of my old figs (for a while) sucks but it is not like I used all of them for DDM anyway, more like 10% and with new new rule changes (assuming they don't make any major balance mistakes) it looks like more figures will be viable.

Anyway I will be doing what I have done for the last few sets, buy a case for a limited tourney with my DDM buddies and get singles of what I lack that is cool.

Maybe it was a dream, but IIRC, WotC will be updating the cards (pdf download I think) for the previously released minis so they can be played with the newer sets.

Thanks,
Rich

I didn't think they were releasing replacement cards for all creatures in all sets... just a select few... the "winners" from the polls they ran. The rest won't get new stat cards.

DDM 2.0 looks like a better game than 1.0, I might even actually start playing again. I stopped when the game became obsurdly complex with rules for terrain, line of sight, effects, etc.

This was indeed the initial announcement. However, given the outcry from all those loyal players who had invested heavily in their collections, WotC had a change of mind and said they would in fact be releasing (through PDFs) updated cards for the entire range of sets from Harbinger onwards.

The "select few" were 100 which were selected via a series of polls. These All-Star cards can be used in "standard" DDM2.0 play plus the latest three sets (I think - can't remember the new rotation policy off the top of my head), while "vintage" play incorporates all cards from all sets.

Thoughts?

They are way over priced. Now I know it's because of the mini's game and the whole rare, common, etc. stuff, but as someone who exclusively uses them as a game aid, till I find it on ebay and cheap, I use 1/4 foamboard in medium, large, huge, etc. sizes...

Meh, I dunno how overpriced they are. On average I spend around 50 cents a mini on Ebay. But I do buy a lot in bulk (or at least I used to).

If you're not buying lots of cheapies to offset the more expensive singles, then yeah they may be expensive.

The last set I was excited about was Blood War. The sets since then have had a couple of nice minis each, but nothing that jumps out. Additionally, the Desert of Desolation set felt somehow lacking in DDM use. It was like fielding two artillery units of glass cannons against each other. It led to boring play.

Also, the DDM 2.0 rules removed the fog of war and morale rules from the game, which detracted from the game and kinda killed the DDM league for me and a couple of other players.

Additionally, the new, reimagined sculpts for many of the monsters look like crap and are incompatible with the old miniatures. The new ettercap looks more like the aspis than an ettercap, and the sphinx sculpt is something dreadful.

I have no intention of buying any Dungeons of Dread.

Plus shipping, for singles, which can add up.
