D&D Minis update from Gamer Radio Zer0 #28

How close are DDM stats to D&D stats?

Meaning, if I don't play DDM and I look at this, will I be able to get an impression of 4e monstars?

hard to say. Usually some themes at least carry over, so put money on the 4E bannaloth warping around the battlefield rather than it having a magic negating grapple as it did in 3E.

DDM:

Ice Archon; Und Wild; 66 Level: 14; AC: 29; DEF: 25; Speed: 8; HP: 85 Attack Actions bM Icy Warhammer: +19 vs AC; 20 Cold Damage AND Slowed (Speed 2) Abilities Evil • Elemental • Cold Resist 10 Cold Special Powers Icy Wallop: +4 Attack against any enemy whose Speed is currently lower than its normal Speed. Icy Ground: Adjacent squares count as difficult terrain for non-Cold enemies.

D&D:

Ice Archon
Medium Elemental Humanoid (Cold)
Init +21, Speed 6
Senses Perception +13
Resist cold 25
Attacks Warhammer +23 vs. AC 1d10+9 + 5 cold AND slowed 1 rd
Relentless Strike +4 Atk and +10 dmg to Slowed
Abilities Icy Ground Adj squares difficult terrain, cold creatures not affected
AC 36, Fort 33, Ref 31, Will 29, HP/Bloodied 117/58
Str +18 (28), Con +13 (18), Dex +16 (24), Int +10 (12), Wis +13 (18), Cha +10 (12)

So the D&D numbers are higher but the special abilities are almost the same.

Balhannoth and the Mind Flayer Scourge have very cool special abilities, I hope that they are the same in d&d too.

Hmm.
Init 21 = 9 (1/2 level) + 7 (dex) +5 (trained)

If true, that means skills are done like saga, and Init is a skill.
Curses.

AC 36, Fort 33, Ref 31, Will 29, HP/Bloodied 117/58
Str +18 (28), Con +13 (18), Dex +16 (24), Int +10 (12), Wis +13 (18), Cha +10 (12)
Defenses

FOR 33: 10(base) + 4(CON) + 9(lvl) + 10?
REF 31: 10(base) + 7(DEX) + 9(lvl) + 5?
WILL 29: 10(base) + 4(WIS) + 9(lvl) + 6?

Racial/role modifiers, I guess... The pit fiend had them as well, though a little higher on average (For 42:21+10+11 / Ref 38:20+10+8 / Will 40: 18+10+12), but he is epic anyway. And the distribution might actually make sense: the pit fiend is described as a soldier(leader), so he probably should have more than average Fort (for being a melee soldier) and Will (for being a leader); the Ice archon is a soldier (guessing from the abilities that slow enemies in melee), so a higher Fort makes sense for a 'tank'.

[off-topic ranting] Why do they still bother counting creature costs like 53 and 66? If they've gone so far as reducing HP to the nearest multiple of five, does it really matter if they use 55 or 65 for that matter? Also, what's "level" suppose to be in DDM2? Except for some random ability that targets creature whose level is below or above X, it just sits there... why not use creature cost instead? [/off-topic ranting]

aham... sorry :heh:

Mind Flayer Scourge
Underdark, 90 points

something something something...

Abilities
Evil, Mind Flayer, Mastermind
+8 Def (Will)
Hmm... ok, Evil and Mind Flayer, I get, but what's 'Mastermind' supposed to be? As far as I know, that's a monster role, but there's no 'brute' or 'skirmisher' on the Desert of Desolation creatures (though there are some with 'power sources' as a listed ability).

What the heck is going on with the ability score modifiers (if those *are* modifiers)?

From the reproduction of the Ice Archon on the news page it looks like they are redefining the score & modifier scale as

Ability Score == Modifier
18 == +28
17 == +26 (inferred)
16 == +24
15 == +22 (inferred)
14 == +20 (inferred)
13 == +18
12 == +16 (inferred)
11 == +14 (inferred)
10 == +12

Is this true ?

Those are ability check modifiers IIRC. Those have level factored in in some manner.
