D&D Monsters that Scare You and Your Players

Alright, alright. Well, the game in question (with the dire quail) has two co-DMs, one of whom was sick yesterday and was only in the game for a short while. But in that time, he strove to create as much chaos as possible.

The party is in the desert, and found a large gathering of quail. The druid decided to try to make some quail friends, and tried to call them towards him, then use animal empathy to make them friendly. He rolled, in succession to try to attract and befriend quail, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1.

The wandering co-DM decided that he attracted the amorous advances of a dire quail.

The rest is Eric's-grandmother-would-not-approve history.

Demiurge out.

As a player I used to be deathly afraid of Stirges. Just the thought of those bloodsucking tick-like birds gives me the creeps.

As a DM my current players are scared of gricks (at least a pack of them ;) ) and of gauths since they were nearly wiped out by one.

There is one monster I forgot, one that is so scary that an advanced version could destroy nations even though it is not a combat machine. One that every intelligent being runs from in terror. One that can alter the very fabric of your being, while you see it happen.

The chaos beast.
