We already have a template for what a D&D movie should look like: Guardians of the Galaxy. Characters are a group of diverse freaks unknown to the movie-going public. With no audience familiarity the filmmakers will need to present vivid and broadly-drawn characters. Action is centered around heists and exploring strange places. The group are not do-gooders by nature, but they kind of fall into doing good. Perfect for a D&D action movie. Leans into comedy. Despite its recent emergence as a quasi-mainstream activity, D&D's reputation among the wider public is still pretty dorky. This movie should lean into that with the kind of knowing genre winks and one-liners that GotG embraces. (Also see Jumanji). Kick-ass soundtrack. If I were the director, I'd take a cue from James Gunn and burn the studio a soundtrack mix when I turned in the treatment. Rush. Black Sabbath (I imagine an opening slow-mo action scene accompanied by 'the Wizard'), Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine. The worst thing they could do is give it a serious tone. Aside from a handful of uber-nerds, nobody wants to watch a serious fantasy movie based off a tabletop game.
