D&D Music / Soundtracks?

Anything by Danny Elfman or Hans Zimmer does it for me. I've avoided using LOTR or Star Wars at this point because we're the type of people to stop the game and say "I've heard that before. Where have I heard that before?"

There are two other obscure groups out there that help create some interesting music: Apocalyptica (picture heavy metal with cellos) and E.S. Posthumus (featured in a lot of movie trailers). The first group has two albums I've found so far, and one entirely dedicated to Metallica tracks, but the second is extremely difficult to find in Canada, so I'm only using downloaded stuff.

The Icewind Dale soundtrack that came with the battle chest version.

Black Arias by Glenn Danzig (not heavy metal, weird mystical sounding mix of orchestral and electronic)

The Triumph of Steel by Manowar :D

I plan on using the music from Diablo II (available for free from the blizzard website) to provide ambience for my upcoming underdark-centric game. I plan on playing it low-volume, almost to the point of inaudibility, to keep it from being e distraction.
Thanks for the tip! I love that music.

I still kinda want to know what issue of Dragon had that song list. I'm kinda interested in using modern music, not just traditional background instrumentals.

There's deffinately times where I could see songs like:
"King Nothing"
"Getting Away With Murder"
"Highway to Hell"
"Master of Puppets"
"Magic Carpet Ride"
"Bad to the Bone"
"The Number of the Beast"
"Whiskey in the Jar"

among other songs, REALLY being appropiate. Granted, they'd all be situational... but like someone else said, I think you could have a playlist of general songs, and then make a few CDs (or have a WinAmp playlist or something) with all of the situational songs, along with a song list.

Heh, I always like this topic. I own a lot of movie soundtracks, and what I've done is rip the best songs from them to mp3, put all the mp3s on a CD (well, two now; I've got too many) so I can throw the CD into the DVD player in the room where we're playing and have enough music to last for hours. I usually put it on shuffle--I don't worry too much about matching specific tracks to specific scenes in the game or anything like that. That's too much trouble.

I have selections from all of the following soundtracks, and probably several more that I'm forgetting:

Stargate
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Van Helsing
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Troy
Gladiator
Conan the Barbarian
Starship Troopers
The Last Samurai
Last of the Mohicans
Signs
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
Patriot Games
End of Days
Sleepy Hollow
Aliens
Hook
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Braveheart
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Sum of All Fears
Minority Report
Batman Begins
Hunt for the Red October
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Heroes of Might and Magic IV

As you can probably imagine, my campaigns tend to develop a darker, almost horror vibe.

I highly recommend the MS CD, particularly the "spookier" tracks.

*ANY* of the Midnight Syndicate CD's, really. (I've got Realm of Shadows on right now...).

I tried background music once or twice, and am pretty ambivilent about it.

Suggestions:
Therion: Vovin and Deggial especially
Nightwish
Tears of Thy Beloved

I seem to remember an issue of Dragon Magazine a couple years ago, (I believe that it was the "funny" or "whacky" issue if that means anything...) That had a whole skew of different songs and when they should be use / what setting to use them in. Anyone know the issue that I'm speaking of? I'd like to get a copy of those lists.

Anyone know that issue?
