D&D Novels- best authors?

In the 80's I read a couple game fiction related series, and then swore I'd never do so again. And then a friend would say, "yeah, but this new one is really good." And so I'd read it, and then swear I'd never read any more game related fiction. And then another friend would promise me that "this new one is really, really good..."

It took a while, about 17 novels if my memory serves correctly, but I finally learned my lesson: I can't stand gaming fiction. The best game fiction is almost on par with the worst fantasy fiction. I agree with Evil Halfling. Don't waste your time reading mediocre work.

I haven't read any D&D fiction since Highschool, but I remember really liking the Finder's Stone Trilogy, (by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb, IIRC). I also read quite a few of the dragonlance books, but I found most of them to be depressingly 'epic'.

It pains me to say it because it's so negative, but my honest answer based on a lot of experience is...nobody

D&D novels have ranged from "Average" to "Amongst the worst books ever" in my opinion.

I'm not going to bother singing the praises of "Average"

I have to agree with this for the most part. WoTC novels (or TSR) are generally below the level of novels published by other publishers. The one thing I will say is while most D&D novels will not wow you with the great writting or story, many do a good job of fleshing out your gaming world with an entertaining story. So it's all relative as to what you want out of a book.
