D&D General D&D S.T.A.L.K.E.R artifact hunting mechanics

Commander 1138

Villager
I'm currently making/testing a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. themed campaign.
For those who don't know, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an acronym for Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers Explorers, and Robbers.
It is a video game series, based on the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986. I'm not gonna bore people with the back story, but I will say that it's based on an alternate timeline, following phenomena within an "Exclusion Zone," where people, later classified as said stalkers, constantly dig deeper into the zone to learn its secrets, but most importantly, smuggle mysterious objects known as "artifacts;" anomalous items- made of debris and radiation, usually capable of enhancing properties, such as rapid healing, resistance to elements, increased speed, etc.
To find an artifact, you need to search inside of anomalies- harmful, enigmatic, nearly invisible force fields, that "spawn" artifacts.
Specifically, you have an "artifact detector" and have to play a cat-and-mouse/hot-and-cold game, to locate one, all the while using metal bolts to "see" and avoid walking directly into an anomaly.
I would love to incorporate this into my campaign, to boost characters, and get them extra side quests, but I can't really find a good mini-game or puzzle to accomplish this. The closest I've gotten is a paper version of "minesweeper." Any thoughts? I apologize for all the prior info.
