D&D Tiles

Icons

Thanks, Thanee! It's looks very similar, although the artwork is very different to what I use.

I don't have a website, otherwise I'd post an example of a combat map. :)

As far as icons go, the best sources are:

1) AngbandTk Icons. These are David Gervais' icons created for roguelike games and used in AngbandTk (I believe they're freeware for non-commercial purposes). It's by far the best I've ever seen. Google should point you in the right direction. One of the nice features about these icons is that they're very easily changable. Don't like the critter with the sword? Copy and paste a trident and with a little modification, it looks great. Roguelike games in general are a great source of icons.

2) Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures (FRUA). FRUA is an old game similar to Neverwinter Nights that allowed you to create modules for AD&D 1st Edition. It's been around for a long time, and as a result has tons or combat sprite art. It's not 32x32 (something like 26x26) but with a little effort can be converted, and a lot of the icons are rather poor. But, the diversity is excellent. If you can't find a suitable AngbandTk icon, you should be able to find one here. Again, do a Google search for FRUA Art and it should pop up a art archive page or two.

Hope that helps!

OK, here's a typical combat map from our last encounter. Reptilian Ogres in a civilian area. A bunch of them got webbed in the center.

Nice, hehe! That giant crocodile is pretty cool. :D

I decided on just using portraits, since it would allow to reckognize the PCs better.

The Javasrcipt map I am using does not allow to layer transparent graphics over the characters somehow (putting two characters on top of each other just shows the last one). I suppose this is done here with the web?

Right now I have to make a "webbed character tile" to do that, since I can only put terrain objects on the ground and character objects above that in a single "layer", so to say.

Maybe, I'll try to add something like that, since it already struck me to be highly useful (adding numbers to villains who look all the same, adding health bar without having to use multiple icons per character, etc). Actually, I have thought about that already, just don't know enough Javascript to make more than very simple alterations yet. ;)

Also adding some props here and there (stones, trees, barrel). First map was really easy (just 4 different tiles), but it worked well for our first combat. :)

From the look of your map, you might find some suitable graphics, if you find some screenshots of older console games. Shouldn't be hard to cut them out to make 32 pixel tiles from those.

That's one of the very useful things about Java. It overlays the objects automatically, allowing you to create webs, flaming spheres, blade barriers, etc. Certainly worth doing. The props are only flavour really, but I have had PC's in the past hiding behind rocks or trees and the like.

I've got a lot of icons from older console games, but they're trickier to find, so I mostly stick to the two sources I mentioned. They are, however, a bit light on the prop front, so I've searched around and got a lot of props from various other games. :)

Have you only just started PbP games?

As a DM. I had one game running on this site for a few weeks, but because of time issues (from both players and me) it slowed down too much, so I decided it didn't make any sense to continue.

About a month ago I started another game (on a german board and in german, however, since it comes a bit easier to me, describing scenes in german). This game runs pretty smooth so far. We just finished that combat within a week (14 rounds of combat, no less - I suppose everyone was pretty excited, I had rather expected a rate of 1rd/2days, not 2rds/day). :)

As a player, I have a bit more experience, mostly from this site. :)

About overlapping icons. The map script I use just doesn't support it, but it shouldn't be too hard to include another function, once I find out how to do that.

If you use bmp images then you need to go the long route and do a bitwise 'and' function with image masks and things like that. But, if you're images are gifs, then I'd imagine they should overlay just fine as long as you set the gifs to have transparent backgrounds.

I'm using .png with transparency, but I guess it's really more of an issue with the javascript I'm using. :)
