D&D General D&D vs. Anime

I watch anime out of boredom or when some of my friends recommend them. I do recommend DMs who play with diverse age groups is to ask each person their favorite shows, and watch them. That way you can short hand some scenes. Ex. You remember the dinner scene from Beverly Hillbillies. ETc.

I like anime and D&D and anime just as I like pineapple and pizza.

separate!

Initially I hated anime. Or so I thought...the yelling, the weird vocalizations “ohhhhh” “ahhhhh” took me out of the moment.

but I looked back. When I was really little (back to toddler) I loved speed racer. In grade school I loved battle of the planets. Did I ever really hate anime?

in the past few years, my daughter started watching anime. Out of respect for her interests, I played along and watched with her. I actually liked some of it! I watched a bunch of death note with her. Entertaining. Our DM likes dragonballz... and we ribbed him about it.

but if it was a venn diagram, there is not going to be perfect overlap but there will be significant overlap.

the thing that does not change though is that the color of our adventures does not reflect anime much. We draw on history, swords and sorcery with a dash of classic D&D gonzo.

but I think there is overlap. Going back decades (sh*t! I am old!) there are rooms full of anime stuff at Gen Con. Back to Milwaukee Gen Con!

coincidence? Nope.

Yeah, Harry Potter and DBZ are my generation (on the older side of millennial). The new crop are very young millennials and gen Z, who grew up on... Umm... I don’t know, My Hero Academia? Hunger Games? I’m actually too old to know what’s cool these days.

For anime I think Attack on Titan, Black Clover, and My Hero Academia would be near the top of current stuff. Naruto and it's variations also remain very strong, and could be considered cross-generational (as could Dragon Ball and Gundam stuff, to a lesser extent).

I'm 36. I watched my first episodes of Dragonball Z (which first aired in 1989) when I was like 8 (1992). Even as an elder millenial it was already kind of old when I got into anime in my teens. I came up mostly through the excellent short run of Berserk!, Escaflowne, Gundam, Naruto, Tenchi Muyo, and Bleach.

...Dragon Ball Z is utter nonsense to me that makes me want to yell "Get off my lawn!" but I can't deny its popularity....
It is nonesense, but something about the characters and their interactions makes me enjoy it.

And I'm WAYYYY older to be a DBZ fan than I should be, imagine your grandfather wearing a "Vegeta is Misunderstood" t-shirt.

hehe

Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer...

Almost all of my gaming friends are also anime fans. In fact, I first got pulled into gaming myself through a group that I met at an anime club, and I joined the anime club because another friend who's also a gamer introduced me to anime!

Some of these friends play D&D exclusively, and some play a bunch of different games.

So in short, my anecdotal experience is that there is a LOT of overlap between the groups.
