Thanks for all the great input. And yes I meant apocalypse - not holocaust. I had just finished watching Godfrey Ho's"Ninja Holocaust" when I posted this.

Holocaust: 1. a great or complete devastation or destruction

It's not commonly phrased that way, but "zombie holocaust," clearly can describe the same sort of event that we usually call a, "zombie apocalypse."

Well, the swastika also has an entirely different (and much more positive) meaning, but some things get such a strong connotation to them as to wipe out any previous meaning the thing may have had.

See also the word decimate, which no one actually uses correctly.

I think the problem is that D&D is likely not the best game system for a zombie apocalypse scenario as the high hp and generally high fantasy nature of the game reduces the tension of one bite leading to your doom.

It's all in the presentation. With 4E it's even easier as you just make hordes of minion zombies. In 3E I'd use the swarm template. I remember using kobold swarms against 10+ level characters in a 3E game and they were quite effective, especially when combined with BBEGs.

No single battle will ever be epic. With zombie apocalypse it's all about grinding the PCs down over time. That's a difficult line to walk because grinding can quickly become boring. But when it's done well, it can really rock.

Also, in 3E, have zombies constantly interrupting the party from whatever they're doing. This is especially effective to denigrate the effectiveness of resting.

The 3.5 hardback adventure Expedition to Castle Ravenloft starts out with a zombie apocalypse scenario. It's a pretty good adventure. I ran it for some friends and they had a blast.
