farmers, poor folk making a bare living off the land. By fate or chance, though, the boy was the target of a faraway seer's inquiries. The seer was the master diviner of the Covenant of the Magi, a great collective of wizards and other students (and masters) of the arcane, and his duty was the location of those suitable, perhaps destined, for training in magic. And training in magic the boy would recieve; there would be no question.

Thusly, Greffegov found himself taken from his family at the age of three, the beginning of a life he hand never dreamed of amidst gaunt farm animals, small portions, and noisy brothers. He was taken away in the night by the seer, a small sack of gold taking his place on his thin bedroll. Greffegov never saw his family again; his dirty surroundings were replaced by vast libraries, sweltering forges, and people, if one could call them that, which his mind could never have produced on its own. His schooling started his second day: learning to read, write, do mathematics, and shovel dung. He became quite skilled at all of these, learning both the common tongue and the language of wizards in a few years. By the age of nine, he was first introduced to his master, Haricont, and allowed access to the arcane laboratories.

For the next ten years, Greffegov immersed himself in magic and knowledge, quickly soaking up his master's lessons and progressing to independent study. He learned the art of spellcasting with prodigious ease, but he tired of the musty libraries and wizards with minds gone near or over the brink from years of obessive study or encounters with the unnatural. When he was certified by the Covenant to be a full-fledged wizard, he packed his spellbook and a few trinkets Haricont had given him, and set out to put his skills to the test.

In a nearby village, he heard reports of orc bandits nearby. Greffegov figured that one had to start somewhere, and took on the task of tracking them down. He wandered in the woods for a week, utterly lost, before he happened upon them by sheer chance. He managed to seriously injure one of the beasts before their leader hit him solidly with a warhammer, bringing the short combat to an end. Greffegov awoke in agony, with cracked ribs and horrible bruising, inside a crude cage. The orc's shaman, an elderly witch named Murgane, healed him with primitive magic, but despite regaining his strength, Greffegov found himself utterly trapped. He had no spellbook, no components, and a mind devoid of any useful magic. He spent his last spell, a ray of frost, to scare a murderous orc away; after that, the tribe avoided coming too close to him. He subsisted for the next three months on odd scraps of meat and stolen food; miserable, cold, and cursing his ill fortune-his bad luck at being taken from his home, the foolishness of striking out on his own, and his ineptitude which had taken his magic and his freedom.

Bolstered by their capture of a human, the orcs became more bold, and eventually a band of adventurers more capable than himself passed through the area.
