d20 casting mechanic - "levels" of magical talent?

Hmmm. I might be inclined to make it some brand new stat -- Magicosity -- and then introduce some sort of price break to the 3 classic spellcasting stats to make it all work out.

There's probably some fairly freaky math involved, but I think it could be done.

Well I think the answer to my original question is "no" - there aren't really any published d20 products that have done something similar.

For the record, this would be a very setting-specific mechanic for a low-magic campaign. Basically a casting system where spell and caster level don't have as wide of a range as standard D&D does and one without dedicated caster classes.

From a mechanic perspective, think Grim Tales meets Shadowrun.

Several systems used dervired stats (Including SR). How about using the combination of Int, Wis and Cha ability modifiers? Spreads the impact out over 3 stats so no one stat becomes too important, yet high Stats will still matter, but doesn't favor arcane vs divine vs spontaneous.

Depending upon the character generation method used you can get a Magic Stat from say 4 to 6 starting and increase though stat increases to around 10 at the highest levels.

The Elite array for max Magic would be
8
10
12
15
14
13

A Magic Stat of 5 to start.

This is also what I would suggest: Grim Tales.
