Hey, I have been lurking on these pages for a while but I am totally psyched for D20 Future TO THE MAX! (sorry). Anyway, this setting is based on an article I read that said global warming could ironically bring about the start of a new ice age.
Here goes:
It has been almost twenty years since the recent interglacial period finished its transformation of Earth. Unchecked buildup of Co2 in the atmosphere is believed to have been the cause of the climate change.
It happened much faster than anyone expected, and the world was completely unprepared. The human population was decimated. While many in technologically advanced nations were able to withstand the climate change, the fields of crops that they depended on failed, causing waves of famine across the globe. As resources dwindled, nations waged war on each other in desperation. These futile conflicts only served to exacerbate the Earth's problems. Slowly, and painfully, the population diminished to a level that the new Earth could support.
Setup: The heroes work for (insert scientific cool sounding name), a city of about 2,000 people dedicated to returning the Earth to its former state. Though progress is unthinkably slow, the sprawling terraform research complex gives hope to the inhabitants of (coolname) and the world at large. Hidden among the remnants of the former North American Union city of Dallas, (coolname) is hidden from the world by necessity. Other outposts of humanity across the hemisphere are an everpresent danger to (coolname), possessing more than their fair share of recovered military technology and lacking in compassion and scientific aspiration. Many residents of the western hemisphere believe (coolname) to be a myth, a comforting bedtime story for children. The world can only hope that they are wrong.
During the campaign the heroes will:
I want to make a setting that's futuristic without relying on the standard ideas (nuclear holocaust/mutants/aliens/psychics) I've read the mecha thing in polyhedron and I hope D20 future's vehicles aren't based on that concept. Mecha's don't seem very practical or realistic to me. I'm hoping for a balanced mix of vehicles and aircraft. The level of technology is what I would guess we could reasonably achieve in about 70 years (No teleporters/energy shields or other star trek like technology).

During the campaign the heroes will:
- Race against competing factions for resources and lost technology
- Thwart the plans of unscrupulous warlords
- Explore cities buried beneath continental ice sheets
- Battle forgotten robotic guardians
- Infiltrate enemy outposts
- Fight woolly mammoths (err, nevermind)
- And much more!
