Could just give everyone Light Armor Proficiency for free, same way you give them Simple Weapon Proficiency for free.

Here is something I have been thinking on for damage reduction armor. Give full armor bonus worth of damage reduction to only wound points, and half (round down) of the armor bonus to defense. This is for VP/WP system ofcourse.
