Ulrick,

Which FLGS - I might be interested in a road trip...?

Thanks!

Mayhem Comics and Games here in Ames IA. Its located just across the street from Iowa State University in what's called Campus Town on Lincoln Way.

Its an "okay" store. And honestly, I hardly ever buy anything there unless its discounted. As I've mentioned before, I don't like paying full price for gaming books.

But my advice to you is to ask yourself before you buy anything is: "When will I use this?"
There's a lot of books on sale. And I was tempted to blow a lot of money. In the end I only bought one book for $5. I've resolved to not fill my shelves with products that I probably never will use. I learned my lesson from the days of 2e.

I never understood this. In the end it is you who decides what books to use. If you buy a book, then use it. It is really not that hard.

It is a good thing that they are discounting. Most of those items have already been paid for in previous fiscal years. Thus, any items now left are a drain on their resources. You may not be aware of this, but a tax person comes to the store every year and evaluates the estimate worth of their product. They HAVE to get rid of it or keep paying taxes on books that are 30-40 dollars, but are no longer even worth half that.
I think that might be a bit garbled. There is no inventory tax to my knowledge.

What is the case is that if you have a $30 book, and it sits around a year, you could write off its "depreciated value". It used to be you could depreciate stock a little bit every year, but then the "Thor Power Tools" decision stated that you can only depreciate it once.

So you can either keep the $30 book around for 5 years and then throw it away, and never get to deduct the depreciated value of it, or you can sell it for less after one year (or pulp it) and take the deduction then.

What the tax guy may be doing is noting what you have annually so you don't monkey around with claiming stuff in later years you've already depreciated.

I usually ask "would I ever use it?" or "is it cool enough that I could make it fit somewhere?". I mean, some things I don't seek out, but just pick up on their own merit. Mystic Eye's "Blight Magic" is a good example of that. I wasn't looking for a Blight Magic sourcebook - I just happened to see theirs, and thought "damn, that's cool. I could use that." So, I have it.

But, something like "Macho women with guns", I could just never ever see myself using, regardless of how cool it might be.
