D20 Mass Combat

I use a set of tabletop wargames rules (an easy, low cost option is Hordes of the Things) to resolve the flow of the battle and zoom in on PC actions. Magic is a minor factor in these battles (mages being non-martial and few and far between in my world.) From previous topics I rember that this represents a minority point of view. So I'm not sure how I would handle epic, high fantasy affairs.
The option presented by Crothian would be a good alternative, as it focuses more on role-playing and less on the technicalities of running the battle. The result of the battle will be determied by the GM in this case, but that's not necessarily a bad thing IMHO.

Besides, the fact that there just aren't enough miniatures for it, Chainmail's no good for mass combat. It's designed as a skirmish game. As such, it's more detailed then a mass combat game should be (Sort of like Warhammer 40,000 2nd edition and Necromunda. Same rules, but Necromunda was more detailed being only a skirmish game. Were you to try Necromunda on a much larger scale, it'd take an intolerably long time to play).

Chainmail was SUPPOSED to scale up to a mass combat version, which I was excited about since I first heard about it. I was positively SALIVATING at the thought of having huge Warhammer Fantasy type battles with D&D rules set in D&D worlds, but apparently it won't scale up, anymore. At least that's what Chris Pramas said in a recent chat. GOD DAMN WIZARDS IN THE ASS!!!
