Okay, I sat down and started working on it, so this is for all you D20 Modern players who remember the original Gamma World module...and also for those who don't. The big gold robot on the cover is a Centurion, controlled by the insane computer that calls itself REAPER.

So far I've rebuilt the gold Centurions using the robotics rules in D20 Future, and it worked just grand. I assumed PL 7 (seems about right for Gamma World's "ancients"). I tried to pick the same weapons wherever possible. I did substitute PL 7 stun grenades for the inferior gas grenades, but kept the fiery explosive and fragmentation grenades. (It's amazing...even after nearly 30 years, the concept that a fragmentation grenade does 3d6 damage remains hardwired into the d20 system. Kinda cool.)

The only other change I made was to increase the robots' size. I mean, if you apply any perspective at all to the front cover, it looks like that robot is 10-12 feet tall! Yet Mr. Gygax claims on p. 27 of GW1 Legion of Gold that they stand a mere "two meters" in height. I made them as large as they've always been in my imagination...and damned if the hit dice and hit points didn't work out just right.

A fun translation. Enjoy. Next I'll be converting the Legionnaires...humans that have been cybernetically enslaved by REAPER.

Legionnaire (Template)

“A legionnaire is a captive human or humanoid mutant who has been subjected to brain alteration by the Control Computer, thus effectively turning the subject into an automaton that answers to commands relayed from the control computer. […] Receivers are implanted at the base of the skull. The alteration process is irreversible, and a legionnaire will always be an automaton as long as it is alive. Removal of the receiver kills the legionnaire” (Legion of Gold, p. 27).

Challenge Rating: Same as original subject -1 (minimum of 1).
Hit Dice: Same as original.
Hit points: Legionnaires gain 3 hp (see below).
Initiative: Legionnaires receive a -2 modifier.
Speed: -20 feet
Defense: -2
Attacks: One programmed weapon
Damage: by weapon
Special Qualities: A legionnaire loses all of the base creature’s special abilities, except for immunity to certain energy types. Legionnaires are immune to critical hits and massive damage, and have Darkvision at a 60’ range.
Allegiances: Serve REAPER. The computer is your friend.
Saves: +2 to Fortitude and Will saves, -2 to Reflex saves.
Ability Scores: The legionnaire has no INT score, acting only as directed by the control computer.
Skills: A legionnaire loses all skills.
Feats: Legionnaires are programmed with the Personal Firearms Proficiency and Light Armor Proficiency feats.

Example Legionnaire:

Covert Canine Moreau Legionnaire (Tough Hero 1): CR 2; Medium-size humanoid; HD 1d10+6; hp 16; Mas —; Init +0; Spd 10 ft.; Defense 14, touch 11, flat-footed 11 (+2 Dex, +1 Class, -2 Legion, +3 armor); BAB +0; Grap +1; Atk +1 melee (1d3+1, slam); or +3 ranged (mini grenade launcher); FS 5 ft. by 5 ft.; Reach 5 ft.; SQ Immune to critical hits, Darkvision 60’; AL –; SV Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +2; AP 0; Rep +0; Str 13, Dex 14, Con 17, Int –, Wis 10, Cha 8.

Armor: Undercover vest (+3 Equip. bonus)

Next I'll post some notes on the various encounter areas in and around the Legion of Gold headquarters, for those of you who have the module.

Interesting, I've never played the old GW but many friends have fond reminisces about it. In would like to point out that your Cetnurion Robot is missing two HP (d20 assumes an average of 1/2 dice +.5 so 4hd x 5.5 = 22 + 20 bonus HP = 42).

Thanks for the feedback, BK. This is my first stab at Conversion or Template-creation, so pointers are appreciated!

I've edited the Centurion stats. Anybody have an opinion on the template? Keep in mind, it's not meant to be an upgrade. There's not much good in getting lobotomized to serve REAPER... :)

Can I add your robot and your moreau to my d20 Modern / d100 NPCs Thread ? The only thing I would change is the format of the stat-block, otherwise the stats remain the same. This is for making a free PDF file of various npcs to use with d20 modern, d20 future, Grim Tales, etc.
