[d20 Modern] "Gun Fu"...now that woulda been a great Polyhedron minigame

JPL

Adventurer
Hong Kong gun opera / martial arts. The heroes are cops or gangsters or something inbetween.

Some new martial arts and guns feats, including Swirling Trenchcoat of Doom and When Doves Fly.

A quick guide to the conventions of the genre, and to the city itself.

Art by Udon.

Woulda been cool....

And yeah, I know Feng Shui and Hong Kong Action Theatre covers this genre...but not for d20 Modern, and not in an easily-digested form like a Poly game...

It's been done. In fact, I think the PDF was called "Gun Opera". Lemme search RPGNow...

Well, turns out I was wrong. There is a product called "Gun Opera" but it's an alternate set of damage rules published by Alternate Reality Publishing (same guys who do Big Bang). It doesn't seem to have anything to do with Hong Knog gun flicks, based on the description.

It doesn't look like this has been done before for d20 Modern. Too bad Polyhedron isn't around anymore. So... you may have hit an untapped niche.

dragon Star (From FFG) has a PrC based on the "Gun Fu" ability. Not what you want, but it good get you going if you want to star your own campaign...

Please don't remind me. It only makes me want to bash the nearest Dungeon magazine reader. :]

:p

[plug] There's gun fu and wuxia feats in the Blood and Fists books [/plug]

We now return to our normal programming (especially if it involves bashing Dungeon for cancelling Poly).

It's alright I got my own back, I cancelled Dungeon for bashing Poly.

I think the Gun Fu genre would be hard to do justice to using D20 Modern with its 5ft steps, fixed movement rates, and grids to move on, set number of actions, and set rules for every little thing you try and do.

I run across the room dive onto the big office table, and slide along the length of in my chest with both of my Glock 17's blazing away at the bad guy.

Feng Shui, no problems with that in fact you probably get a +2 on your attack roll for such a in genre move.

D20 Modern,

GM: So you moving and firing, do you want to shoot first and then move or move first then shoot?

Player: Both at the same time, like I discribed.

GM: Sorry thats not possible. We'll say you move first if thats okay?

Player: Whatever.

GM: Roll your jump, roll.

Player: Erm okay, darn I rolled a 2.

GM: Hmm you don't clear the table I'm afraid, so you stop at the end of it. Roll to hit, but I'm giving you a -2 as you bagged into the table with the failed jump.

Player: Okay a 13, and a 18, with my bonus the second shot should hit.

GM: Second shot? Sorry you only get one attack.

Player: One but I said I had both guns blazing.

GM: Yeah, but you moved more than 5ft to get to the end of the table so only one attack. So I'm afraid you miss.

Player: Can we play Feng Shui? :o

:o

Thus the need for a few rule mods --- like Moridin's Gun Fu feat --- to better emulate the genre.

But the same argument could be made about superheroics, or pulp, or swashbuckling...all of which have been done to the satisfaction of many via d20.

No, Gun Opera doesn't have anything to do with Gun Fu, though the alternate damage system in it is quite a bit more suitable for that sort of gameplay than the default damage system of D20.

ARP has two classes on RPGnow, plus a third on the way, which definitely help in creating a Gun Fu environment. First is the Action Hero, a new basic class designed around the concept of "cinematic physics", the altered state of physics that result from the way films get edited. The class also specifically includes a Gunfu talent tree. Second is the Gunfight Disciple. This class, written by Matt Haught, is based on the modern handgun combat technique, as taught by a number of highly respected shooting schools in the U.S. Matt has also written the Scattergunner, another PrC based on real world combat shotgun techniques. Third is the Kowloon Gun God, written by Fraser Ronald, author of Blood & Guts: In Her Majesty's Service. This class was written specifically with hong kong gunfighting in mind.

Lastly, LPJ Designs has a class, the Gun Priest, which is a similar idea to the Kowloon Gun God, but with quite a different perspective based exclusively on one movie, IIRC.
