[d20 Modern] House rule for paratroopers?

Rereading this thread, I realized that I ended up adopting a different scheme entirely: parachuting is considered the same as jumping down from a 20' height - characters make a Jump check (and a Tumble check if trained) to reduce the Reflex save DC, then make a Reflex save to avoid damage. There is a -2 circumstance penalty for low-level jumps.

To maneuver a standard parachute, one may use the Pilot skill or the Balance skill - Balance takes a -4 penalty to maneuver.

Specialized equipment such as a parafoil requires the AO feat.

I have thought long and hard about this, and I feel that the player in said game who responds first in this thread should be allowed an automatic +10 competency bonus to his Jump or Tumble checks when parachuting.

:D

What are you worried about? Marcel did fine last time! :)

It's poor Vidal who keeps getting screwed with his pants on - hard landing from the first parachute jump, fatigued by the patrol...and he's our TOUGH hero!?!

OK, all kidding aside, I think that the lack of a 'Sport' skill, ala Spycraft, is one of the shortcomings of d20 Modern. There is nothing in the game to reflect the skills at football by 5 year veteran striker has, or my Navy SEAL's scuba skills compared to the olympic swimmer who has never been scuba trained, or a paratrooper with mediocre strength who can't really use the Jump skill for crap but has taken 35 jumps, including 5 into combat.

I agree - that might be another new skill to add.

The first Modern character I created was supposed to be a pro mountain biker - then I realized the core rules offered nothing that covered cycling!?! It wasn't until Urban Arcana was released and assigned Balance to it that I has an official answer on what skills to use. :\
